The original Predator (1987) starring Arnold Schwarznegger was better than expected, but I never watched any of the sequels. But the prequel Prey (2022) is a remarkable film, with a Comanche audio track and the most beautiful cinematography since Last of the Mohicans (1992). Prey is set in 1719 on the Northern Great Plains. The Comanche were nomads, migrating between the Rio Grande all the way into Canadian territory. They were also the most powerful and feared Native American tribe. It’s no accident that the Comanche were featured in John Ford’s classic The Searchers (1956).
When Prey begins, French trappers are already competing for buffalo with the native tribes. When the Predator drops into this tense setting, the Comanche are soon aware of a dangerous intruder within their midst. The hunter becomes the hunted as the Comanche begin to track him. What follows are some of the most stunning combat sequences between the Predator and the Comanche. Add an excellent performance by Amber Midthunder as Naru, our POV character. Jaw-dropping combat sequences that roar with intensity combined with pristine cinematography is such a rare gift for home theater buffs. Combine this with a grizzly attack, a predatory mountain lion—even the gorgeous land itself is unforgiving with quicksand pits. I own the Blu-ray disc, and highly recommend selecting the Comanche audio track. It’s been a long time since a film drove me to repeat viewings. Prey is tremendous--I’ll have to buy this disc again on 4K.
