Been 3 or so years that i've been looking for a new pair of studio monitors. I'm a filmmaker. Mostly i create my own short films as well as edit others short films. I do sound design as well, sometimes.
I do use the same setup for just chilling and films.

Now, ik that i should put the right budget for proper spekaers, but honestly, since i don't really mix nor master almost anything besides sound mix for films, i don't really need to spend a lot on studio monitors for track mixing. With that said, i was looking at those speakers, M audio bx8 d3. I've seen that can go quite low in bass. Low end is really important to me.

But then i've seen this Presonus Eris 3.5 2nd Gen Subwoofer Set. Ik that those are known to be bad studio monitors, but, are bad even for my use case? I can get a 2.1 for 250 bucks new.

Thanks a lot

They're bad period.

If you’re on a strict budget but like/need deep bass then i suggest KRK Rokit 5 monitors and the KRK S8.4 subwoofer, I’ve owned various KRK monitors/subs over the years and never had issues with them at all.

If they’re too expensive then there’s decent options for monitors on sweetwater link, just search by price

@Somafunk thanks. Do you know of any ohter good 2.1 bundles like presonus? Cause budget is like 300 bucks for everything

Even for just casual listening? I almost never do mixing besides simple volume compensations
Hear for yourself:

Open this link: https://listener.squig.link/, then in the Equalizer tab click "Import EQ" then select the .txt file attached below.

You can then listen to the Scarlet Fire track or any one of your own tracks by choosing "Upload Song" and toggle the EQ On/Off by clicking on "Enable All/"Disable All".

Use a neutral pair of speakers/headphones/IEMs for best results.

i see, presonus are really bright. But also, that eq is the only the presonus without the sub

Correct.

A sub will fill in the response below 100Hz, but the massive hole in the midrange will remain.

Not to mention the massive shift with angle in the vertical, courtesy of their sorry excuse for a crossover. (I've had my hands on a pair.)

There's not much a of a point in basing a 2.1 on a pair of crap speakers. At least start with some Edifier MR4s if you must.

With an F3 of ~48 Hz and F10 of 40 Hz, BX8 D3s don't even go particularly deep for an 8" class speaker. (I wouldn't know where to find a pair new either.) If your level needs are relatively modest, a pair of "barefoot" RP5 G5s or JBL 305P MkIIs will actually come close, and the 306P MkIIs still exist as well, as do Kali LP6v2s (F3 47 Hz, F10 39 Hz). Further downsizing options include Kali LP-UNF (F3 / F10 like LP6v2 but in a 4.5" speaker) and the even smaller ADAM D3V or iLoud Micro Monitor. Obviously you can't expect massive bass level handling from a 3", but the LP-UNF apparently can take quite a beating.

It would be good to know what these will be connected to, as mitigating ground loop issues may cost extra to some degree.

ok so
Edifier MR4 alongisde Edifier T5 would be a better choice, right?

For $300 - why not to get a pair of pretty good entry level 5" studio monitors from a HOLY TRINITY :) - 1) Adam T5V 2) JBL 305 II 3) Kali LP-6.
1) Need a bit of EQ, but hiss less and have higher quality enclosure.
2) Might be the cheapest option, better to apply EQ as well, may hiss but that experience varies.
3) Formally most balanced out of the box, hissing is questionable.
Any of these are a big step ahead compared to Eris 3.5 and MR4.
Edifier T5 is 6.5" toy sub working from 40 Hz at best, while the monitors listed above would cover up range from 50-60 and higher.
It's better to get a decent sub later if you need it.

thanks for the advice. I'm saving up for a 3090 for my AI works so budget for decent speakers is not so much. As for the mr4s, are they better then the presonus? looking at the measurements looks like it. As for the studio monitors you have mentioned, as i said. i don't really do mixing like at all, is happened like once in 6 months

btw, edifier is an 8 inches
You're right, my bad. Still, it's not a sub you'd hook up to something better than MR4.
If you want to spend as less as possible, MR4 seems an obvious choice.
