I started a search for a stereo preamp, for my grandson’s stereo.
My grandson graduated from college about a month or so ago, with a degree in psychology. He graduated with honors and has excepted a position with the college to do clinical research as part of a funded study, while he works on his masters degree. He and his GF, an elementary school teacher, have decided to set up light housekeeping in a rented house just off campus. So the families has taken this opportunity to clean out furniture and household goods, they can use. Part of what I’m providing is a stereo system.
I’m using this as an opportunity to clean out a few closests, so far I’ve given him (or them)
a set of EPI speakers
Carver TFM-15 amp
Denon turntable
Benchmark dac
Cambridge Audio CD transport
Yamaha preamp (that doesn’t work anymore)
all the necessary wires and cables and stands
The GF’s father gave him about 600–700 LPs and he has a quite large cd collection.
I looking for a stereo preamp, with a phono section, tape monitoring function and at least 2 other line level inputs. This will be a 2 channel stereo, no video, no computers. So far I’ve found 3 locally
Carver C-1, looks brand new - $250
Adcom 555, looks brand new - $250
Nikko (model unknown), looks used, but not abused - $200
None of them are current offerings and I’m not really sure if any of the manufacturers are even still in business
The original set up worked for about a month, then the preamp lights up, but now music output, I stopped and checked it out today, bypassed the preamp using the volume control on the dac, to drive the amp, it worked fine. Everything I’ve looked at on eBay is $400-$500 to start, more than I really want to spend and I want to see it first. Anything new is really expensive. I could let them have my Onkyo/Integra P-304, but then I’d need another preamp. Not really sure what my next move is.
