I'll give an example, very brief, just to give someone an idea if they might want to listen to the three or more works.
The Replacements: from punk to their own unique brand of power pop (best description I can give it). Seven albums released.
Live, the 'mats might give you the best damn show you ever saw, or hit like a high school garage band doing their first show. This is why my first brush stroke is not their very solid punk debut, but "Stink". Legend has it they did a live show that was busted and shut down, and they confiscated a bootleg tape as that happened. They listened, liked it, and released it.
This gives some solid punk vibes, but also some stretching of styles. I think it also shows the band as it is just establishing what they can do, and developing their skills. Great foreshadowing of things to come, and not just musically. Be sure to give "Go" a chance, it points towards the future.
Second stroke, "Let it Be". If this is not the favorite of a Replacements fan I am going to be surprised. The band, in terms of focus and how they work together is there. The individual skills are strong. Very much the midpoint, bridging punk with where they ended up going.
This is the best single album to start with, if you are unsure about more.
Third stroke, "Tim". This is the power popish "commercial" album. Not my fav, but a very, very good and interesting album. They definitely are showing they CAN do things here, but in my non-expert opinion, they were starting to stray... and the chaos caught up to them. Banned from Saturday Night Live, though their performance of Bastards of Young was pretty good considering how hammered they were.
An impressionistic portrait, to be sure, but I think it works.
