Time for some Cowboy Rock tonight, starting off with.
The Eagles - Desparado 1973 Early CD DR-10
Desparado, a song that defined a generation, Reprise Lyrics,
"The queen of diamonds let you down,
She was just an empty fable
The queen of hearts you say you never met
Your twisted fate has found you out
And it's fin'lly turned the tables
Stole your dreams and paid you with regret
Desperado"
desparjpg.jpg

Next up is,
Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection 1971 Early CD DR-14
A good taste of the Ole West from a Limey :p
Seriously one of my all time fav EJ albums.

Love Tumbleweed Connection. But this one is my favorite. Hell, Levon alone is worth the price of admission:

Tim, could I ask you to do an experiment, please? That track is available on YouTube, as

Switch back and forth between 480p and 720p settings - do you pick any subjective differences?

Having a bit of a CSN orgy tonight. Starting with a nice oldie compilation.
Buffalo Springfield - Retrospective: The Best Of Buffalo Springfield 1969

bsr.jpg

Next in the cue I got
CSN&Y - American Dream 1988
Not my fav CSN&Y issue but I haven't listened to it for a while. LOL

csny.jpg

If I don't make it through American Drean or I'm up late I've got
David Crosby - If Only I Could Remember My Name 1971
on the play list. One of the best sounding CD's I own from that era, it always works here.

Modern rock, Japanese style. Being a bassplayer my self, I just love her basslines.

This one is just too awesome. If this enthusiasm and musical joy doesn't rub off on you, you are dead inside:

There is no way to switch instantly between them, Frank, so even if I had a way to match the volume and someone to switch it for me so I'd be listening blind, that would be a pointless waste of time. without those simple controls, testing something as subtle (to inaudible) as you have in mind, we'd merely hear what we expect to hear. For me, that would be nothing. For you it would be something. Probably something profound. I'm no match for you in the imagination department.

I've the CD81888 pressing, with very high DR values ... but upon ripping it to computer, EAC struggled and failed. On closer inspection, its progressively suffering major CD rot.

The thing is; my Linn plays it without incident, its error-correction apparently compensates ... so perhaps I'll need rip it using the CDP's analog outputs, just like I plan on doing with my HDCD pressings.

Didn't put the pressing # into the meta data when I ripped mine but it is also a highly dynamic release. DR13 over all with track 1 at DR17.
Does EAC have settings for different ripping correction levels? k3b has 4 levels of Paranoia checking along with setting the number of times it will attempt a re-read of a sector.
Or maybe try a different ripping software.

Like the aggressive recording of the percussion on all the cuts. The forward drum levels on the E track sounds great even on my laptop speakers. Have to listen later on my big system.
Does sound like a DR of around 4 though. LOL

Yes, EAC has levels/modes, mine is set under the the most-precise "Paranoid" (as EAC calls it) setting, and I can(&probably should) lower the setting further, however I need to setup my Ikemi to output/decode HDCD to disk anyway, and since I have ~20 rotting disks, I figured wait til then. Plus, for giggles & wild curiosity, this process allows me to measure the output of the Ikemi to the actual HDCD/CD .

How did you get them to rot?

I don't know of any at my place.

Until I started ripping CD to computer, probably because my CDP plays near everything right thru without incident, I didn't think CD rot was much of an issue. However, that all changed as I encountered more & more ripping failures. Place these CD up to the light, and the rot is clearly seen ... (internet pic)

Many of my oldest orig. pressed (high DR valued) silver-backs CDs are showing signs of progressive "rotting". I've noticed that finger print area's suffer most, cleaning 'em is a delicate process, often leading to more damage if not done with great care. I certainly will never again recommend eating a sloppy peanut butter & jelly sandwich while handle CDs ... no matter how yummy.

I seem to remember some discussion of using some approach to make the CD no longer transparent. With a top loader guys were putting something on top of the CD to block the lazer.
Maybe take a affected CD you no longer care about and spray paint the top with a black layer and see if it reads any better?

Don't know what you mean by a "lower" setting. Here's how k3b describes the Paranoid level settings .
0: No checking, data is copied directly from the drive.
1: Perform overlapped reading to avoid jitter.
2: Like 1 but with additional checks of the read audio data.
3: Like 2 but with additional scratch detection and repair.

On the rotted CD's, as bad as the label area is deteriorated it sure might be worth a go at blocking the transparency. If you can't rip them now you got nothing to lose?

The aluminum layer is so thin you can see a bright light source through it, even on an undamaged disc, if it doesn't have an opaque paint layer on the other side. Stare at one that only has clear laquer and some text, for example.

So, repainting would be unlikely to repair those discs, in my opinion. The aluminum reflective layer is gone.

---

I notice now that he is holding jut that kind of clear laquered disc, and light is coming through it (diminished) in the undamaged areas.

Lol! "DR"... :D Hey, why don't we listen to some actual music for a change?

I'm just saying... :p

But seriously. I know what you mean though. The drummers on these tracks are feckin' awesome. No doubt.

But I just can't get over that bassplayer. Her basslines are perfect. Who knew a tiny cute Japanese girl could groove this hard?
