figured I could share this now since I got the last spare of Creative SB X7
- PC => (USB; 5.1) Creative SoundBlaster X7 as DAC => NCore NC122MP poweramps from audiophonics => speakers.
- TV => (Optical; AC3) X7 as DAC => ..
This is meant to be a low cost / high quality home theater, not that I'm capable of measuring (haven't done room correction since mic costs money).
The power amps have flat responses, the X7 has very low noise on spec as DAC, and no complication with AVR or HDMI stuff. X7 is the only thing I found that could decode Dolby from TV's optical out with 5.1 preouts and mixing PC output with no delay and not costing thousands. It's been dead for years of course, with no replacement on market.
On PC it needs Equalizer APO to reduce gain by -20dB or it'd wake up all neighbors, while SPDIF volume is reduced in X7 independently (with night dynamic range for Dobly decoding).
It doesn't do lossless Dobly audio or anything more than 5.1, but good enough for TV streaming apps. PC is optional when watching TV, but I do need my phone or a wireless keyboard for volume control.
Other than that, I'm expecting the setup to last another 5 or 10 years, and could pick a commercial TV as the next screen if they remove optical audio from home TVs.
