Poll: Which SINAD Number to Post in the Review Index for 'AVR/AVP''s ?

Hello Everyone,

I am assisting Amir in updating the Review Index at ASR.


Reviews at ASR of AVR/AVP's typically measure the SINAD of the preamplifier and amplifier of the unit.

Per @amirm, the Review Index is no longer supported by its developer and the section on 'Audio Electronics' is limited to the entry of a single number to represent measured SINAD for the tested gear.

As noted recently by @peng, this limitation can create confusion in comparing the SINAD of AVR/AVP's.


Would you prefer the SINAD posted at the Review Index for an AVR with AVP functionality reflect the performance of the preamplifier, the amplifier or an average of the two measurements ?

An AVR is NOT an AVP ... one has a power amplification section, and the other does not. You cannot "average" both, as that would be meaningless.

Post the SINAD for the AVP, which would be the main noise factor in an amplification chain (assuming source noise is not an issue, which is true for modern digital sources).

With modern Class-D power amps being so quiet nowadays, any noise one would hear from their AV system would then be from the AVP.

But you must specify the output voltage the SINAD is specified. For example, a SINAD at a 10Vrms output (able to drive a Purify 9040BA module to full power in low-gain mode) would be higher than the SINAD measured at a 4Vrms output.

Is a final SINAD taken for the AVR, i.e. if you input a digital signal and measure the amp output? That’s what I think is most important. The preamp output is secondary, and one presumably buys an AVP if they only want a preamp device.

The AVP is different, so a different SINAD should be reported in the index, i.e. input a digital signal and measure the preamp output.

I think both AVP and AVR specs should be measured since none are comparable to the other and are of interest to different clients.
