I will say that most Classical and some Jazz recordings are a lot more engaging if you turn it up on a system that has some dynamic capability and good frequency response. Too much distortion makes classical sound like mud and same goes for certain Jazz records.Perhaps people who measure their rooms with calibrated mics and so forth are attracted to "seriousness" by some definition. isdk.
I honestly think I get more classical shoved down my throat then pop, I'm getting to the stage where I'm going to actively check out some pop soon as I'm so out of touch. I watch a lot of TV and film, but my tastes must steer me away from things with pop music in it. I do like using Shazam when something interesting is on a soundtrack, Camp Saint Helene is my most recent find this way.You get pop music "shoved down your throat" everywhere you go, in every TV show, movie, etc. It actually takes effort to NOT listen to mainstream pop.
I've got a very balanced playlist for you if you use Spotify... everything from K-pop to classical choral music. Curated by Jacob Collier who is (rightly IMO) said to be a musical genius on par with anyone you care to name. So it's wide-ranging, but no stinkers.I honestly think I get more classical shoved down my throat then pop, I'm getting to the stage where I'm going to actively check out some pop soon as I'm so out of touch. I don't use Spotify. I didn't see much modern pop music in a quick skim through the list, I did see a lot of old music, lots of which I already know. There's a lot of everything including old stuff (lots of EWF and Stevie Wonder, which I approve of), but you'll find new stuff interspersed pretty regularly. I personally like numerous albums from Korean artist. "Palette" and "Lilac" albums from IU / Lee Ji-Eun really sound good, and anything covered/performed by Yerin Baek, moreover, those from her earlier era with 15&.I've got a very balanced playlist for you if you use Spotify... everything from K-pop to classical choral music. I sometimes hear something in a film or TV series that really grabs me. Shazam doesn't always work, or maybe I start it too late, so I try to spot the song/piece in the credits. The last one was in the bonkers Amazon Prime series 'My Lady Jane'. It was 'Fear Is Like a Forest' by Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile. It's on the album 'Lotta Sea Lice', which I already had! Somehow I'd either not listened properly when I bought it, or forgotten some of it, duh!I honestly think I get more classical shoved down my throat then pop, I'm getting to the stage where I'm going to actively check out some pop soon as I'm so out of touch. I really like Iggy Pop's radio show on 6 Music, he seems to play whatever he wants from a lifetime of loving music. There's a lot of everything including old stuff (lots of EWF and Stevie Wonder, which I approve of), but you'll find new stuff interspersed pretty regularly. I'm amazed how good Shazam is, when combined with rewind to find a bit with just the music, it very rarely fails for me. That CB & KV track sounds good, will listen properly later.I sometimes hear something in a film or TV series that really grabs me. Some genres appear not to concern the musical properties at all, e.g. post-punk and krautrock. The idea of genre is very context dependent. One minute most of the music known for the last millennium is collected in one genre, the next music with one minor change in a programmed drum pattern is its own genre.
It's also quite culturally dependent as well. So it might be a bit difficult to draw a good conclusion from a poll like this.
I voted anyway.
It is probably possible that it can be done but but it is not something that I can do.It would be interesting to statistically summarize how many of the 10 check boxes each voter checked. I don't suppose the forum software does that.
Having looked through those I'm more convinced than ever that genres are a useless construct. Many bands I like are cited in so many genres that they become meaningless.Should we run another poll with different styles of Rock?
Here are some links that can provide inspiration for which ten alternatives that can be included in a Rock Poll:

Here's another list, and if you don't subscribe to Spotify, you can listen for free just to hear how the songs sound. Also YouTube videos in the thread.I don't use Spotify. I couldn't agree more, which is why I remove all genres other than Classical, Jazz or World automatically added to albums ripped into our library. Example that just came to mind: Metal is powerful and nasty, right, so why isn't a lot of Hüsker Dü Metal? 'Diane' (by the much missed Grant Hart) is a prime example.Having looked through those I'm more convinced than ever that genres are a useless construct. All pop music is influenced by previously made and added a little changes, mixed a little. Like Rock And Roll:Having looked through those I'm more convinced than ever that genres are a useless construct. Many bands I like are cited in so many genres that they become meaningless.
