Edit:
Forget the text below. The choice for the vote is made via the suggestions Voodooless received via ChatGPT. You can select multiple options and then change them if you want.:)

____

Yes, I know it's not possible to vote, YET. That's because it kind of short-circuited in my head when I was going to enter the options. They will come but please help me with suggestions. :D
Just put in some suggestions. You don't have to justify your proposals, if you don't want to. I sort it all out when I compile the voting list.:)

Can twenty different voting options be reasonable to have?

Like this to show the challenge of what to include in the vote. A quick google search on:
Different music styles gives as a first suggestion

Country blues
Contemporary classical music
Country rap
Electronic
Jazz
Pop
Progressive house
Coat
Soul
J-pop
Indie people
Arena rock
Kind of punk
Crossover music
Contemporary R&B
Crust punk
Disco
Experimental rock
Folktronica
Electronic dance music
Hip hop
Lo-fi

I think that list is pretty bad I must say so we can make a better one. :)
Criticism of list above:
For example Rock, wouldn't it be more interesting to have subgroups such as classic rock, hard rock, heavy metal, progressive and so on and skip categories such as crust punk and a few more on that list? Fusion jazz/rock is not included as a category. I listen to that a lot, but that's me. Maybe you don't want to include fusion as a category to vote for? Where is Reggae?
Folktronica, que? Where is Classical Music, other than Contemporary classical music? By the way who listens to Contemporary classical music (prejudice from my side)? Perhaps a poll could provide an answer to that.;)
Maybe Classical music up to and including the 19th century, Classical music from the 19th century onwards? Or maybe it gets confusing with such alternatives? Country rap instead of just Country is weird and so on..

Please note this is mostly intended as a fun poll. It will not be the definitive ultimate list. Incidentally, it can never be created due to too many wishes.
There will always be those who think that a vote on 20 different music styles lacks X, unnecessary that Y is included and so on,thats how it is BUT I'm grateful for feedback, suggestions on what to add to the list. :)

Also, I'll create the voting list later tonight, if you haven't made a suggestion before then you can't complain on the list option (if you're reading this thread after that, sorry).

For example, if I mention that Blues should (of course) - be included as a category, then there are different styles to choose from, the question then is which and how many? See here:
  • Blues
    • Acoustic Blues
    • African Blues
    • Blues Rock
    • Blues Shouter
    • British Blues
    • Canadian Blues

Rock-pop, singers (including some country like Johnny Cash or Merle Haggard), serious music (classics all periods), jazz-rock (Magma and late Coltrane only), some rap too (like Public Enemy, early Run DMC, others non-american like NTM/IAM, Sexion d'assaut), disco (mainly euro : Amanda Lear and Patrick Juvet, but also some Village People), blues (mainly Robert Johnson), some soundtracks too (like John Barry; Tangerine Dream and so on).

"... The most": that's Classical for me. Of course there are many sub-genre of Classical and I like most but some better than others. Amongst sub-genres, "the most" for me is Chamber Music, especially string quartet.

Thanks for suggestions! :)

Do I have my head over water now? I realize that it will be challenging to fix a voting list BUT I think it will be fun. :D

ChatGPT came up with this:
1. Rock
2. Pop
3. Hip Hop / Rap
4. R&B / Soul
5. Jazz
6. Classical
7. Country
8. Electronic / Dance
9. Reggae / Ska
10. Blues
11. Folk / Americana
12. Latin
13. Metal
14. Punk
15. Funk / Disco
16. Gospel / Christian
17. World / Ethnic
18. New Age
19. Soundtrack / Film Score
20. Other (for genres not specifically listed)

I can't give a bloody LIST as to my favourite music genres :D

I'll listen to everything at least once, with very little exception - usually ;)
Thanks DSJR , your listening habits are incredibly helpful to me in creating this list. ;):)
Jokes and side. The list will be what it will be. Just a fun little thing. :D

I think it will be better if I put in several voting options.

Hm, in my eyes it was a sensible list to start from. Twenty music styles, a wide list of styles. It seems reasonable. Covers a lot.:)
If you do a poll make it so we can choose multiple answers, and change the question to which genres do you very regularly listen to, I'm not sure I could honestly pick one these days.

I now notice that I can only enter a maximum of 10 options. Voodooless you can fix a new ChatGPT list of ten options? I think I'll make it easy for myself and take the ten ChatGPT list suggestions as voting options. :)
If no one else objects to that?
1. Rock
2. Pop
3. Hip Hop / Rap
4. R&B / Soul
5. Jazz / Blues
6. Classical
7. Country / Folk
8. Electronic / Dance
9. Reggae / Latin
10. Other (for genres not specifically listed)
That is what it makes... or after I scolded it for leaving stuff out:

I think the shorter list is better in some ways than the longer one, the longer one had a few sub genres of rock, but far from all the main ones.

The most? Classical, mostly whatever’s playing on SiriusXM.
Starting to spend time with early, pre-baroque music. Thank streaming for that.

In the car, mostly 60s pop.

After classical: Celtic, Cole Porter,

Choice made. Thanks Voodooless, or ChatGPT for the help. :)

Thank you to others who also gave tips, advice and suggestions.:)

It is of course impossible to include subgenres in a list of ten. That requires other lists like what kind of rock music you listen to the most and so on.

So now you are welcome to discuss your choices if you want.:D

That is automatically what you get: members complaining that their favorite niche subgenre isn't number 1 on the poll  ;)

BTW, you should probably have randomized the poll-order to remove some bias. We're a science forum after all ;)

Louis Armstrong: "There's two kinds of music ... I play the good kind"

I like several different genres of music, but when situations get me down, nothing reaches out to me like classical music. I was very opinionated about certain styles and composers until a friend of mine in college said, "Classical music is dead people trying to tell you something. All you've got to do is figure out what they're trying to say."

That started me down a rabbit hole that, as far as I can see, has no end. ;)

You have a point in the randomized of the poll-order. Now it seems to be locked for changes so it has to be as it is. :)

So far, the voting result is not surprising in my eyes, other than I would not have guessed that Electronic / Dance would be the genre of music that had the second most votes. Fascinating. Or maybe it was expected, I don't know. :)

Only 16 voters so far. We'll see if the results hold up.

Edit:
Now 17 votes and shared first place for Electronic / Dance.
I realize the irony of potentially adding bias to the voting results by mentioning Electronic / Dance's vote count.;)

What's interesting here is that Jazz and Classical are dramatically over-represented when you look at more gen-pop surveys of music genre listening habits. If you look up similar data from elsewhere, they both tend to get single digit percentages.
