Polk R700 Tweeter Question – Original or Modified?

Hello everyone,

I’m considering buying a used pair of Polk R700 speakers, but I noticed the tweeter looks different from any others I’ve seen before.

Did Polk ever produce the R700 with this type of tweeter, or does it look like it may have been modified or repaired? I haven’t come across this version before, so I wanted to ask if anyone here has experience with it or knows whether this tweeter was used in a specific production run.

I'm not sure, but that looks altered to me. It looks like the tweeter has been replaced with the tweeter from the previous generation LSiM series. The phase plug in the center of the tweeter is definitely not the same as the newer version.

Maybe somebody else here knows something I don't.

Have you asked on the Polk Forums? Lots of Polk experts and enthusiasts there might be able to tell you.

But I'm guessing they've been modified.

Found it. it turns out to be the Peerless OT19NC00-04. I’d probably still buy them since the original tweeter isn’t particularly well regarded. My main concern is whether he modified the crossover to suit the driver. Since he claimed everything was original, and that now seems questionable, I think I’ll just walk away.

Yes a typical ”tinkerer” would not even had thought of crossover modifications and if they did that to was a kludge.

If you want a second set of speakers to kick around, only buy if the price is very very low

That is the tweeter that Polk used on the earlier LSiM series (or at least a nearly identical version of it), just as I posted above.

The newer tweeter is supposedly a small improvement - maybe in that it can cross over a little lower.

But yeah, I agree that it's suspicious the seller said everything was original when it certainly doesn't appear that way. I think you're right to be leery.

I wouldn't buy that speaker if I was pretty sure there was a driver replacement (from a different model..).. too many "if's"....
