TLDNR: Looking for a USB-C to 3.5mm audio jack adapter that does not have a DAC built in. Or a cheap one with a DAC that makes zero hiss and pops.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on ASR, I hope it's the right spot for it.

I've been happily using a USB C to 3.5mm jack dongle that, I believe, came with a Xiaomi Mi 8 smartphone some 7 years ago. It's now plugged into the newer Xiaomi Civi 4 Pro phone and still working. It's not aging very well though: it's showing some signs of oxidation at the connectors and producing some crackle with the right twist of the cable. So I started looking for a replacement.

I thought it was straightforward so I went and bought the cheapest adapter (1 buck) on Aliexpress, but to my surprise, it didn't work. After some reading, I discovered an option in the developer settings that needed disabling, something about audio routing through USB. That solved it! It meant this new dongle had a DAC and that my old dongle didn't have one and was just passing an analog signal from the phone's port to the earphones (something called Audio Accessory Mode that's now deprecated) and that my phones supported that. Cool! When I plug the new dongle, I get an unfamiliar system notification telling me sound is playing over USB and offering a bunch of EQ options, Dolby Atmos, etc. Also cool. Only, new annoyance: there is now a good level of audible hiss when idling and an even bigger one when playing anything, at any volume. My humble passive DAC-less dongle + both my old and new phones produced absolutely zero hiss.

I looked on Ali for DAC-less dongles but couldn't find anything relevant. So, I decided to try a better DAC. After more reading, I picked up a GraveAudio DA06 dongle with a CX31993 DAC, no amp. About 5 bucks.

The item arrived, I plugged it in and listened: the constant hiss was gone! But, two new problems: a temporary hiss when plugging the earphones or starting playback, and... tiny, random pops!

I could have lived with the temporary hiss but the pops? Too distracting. How do these dongles sell at all? I'm no audiophile, maybe very picky, but nowhere near knowkedgeable or experienced as you folks here and it seems to me this dongle is just wrong. Perhaps my iems are too sensitive? I'm using the modest KZ Zax. On my phone and dacless dongle, I can't go beyond 50% volume on these, so maybe they are more revealing than the average iems?

Anyway, I am back to the beginning: I need a decent replacement to my humble passive dongle, with no hiss and no pops when idling or playing. I'm not demanding on the sampling and resolution. Just...basics done well.

Please, if you know of a DAC-less dongle, let me know. Alternatively, if you can recommend one with a DAC that's free from these issues I'm willing to consider, even though originally I didn't see myself spending more than a couple of bucks on this. Now it seems my next best bet is a Jcally JM20 but that's more than 10 times my original budget .

One more bit of, maybe, relevant information: I'm getting the Letshuoer S08 planar iems in the mail soon. From what I read, these should be relatively easy to drive. But maybe I'm wrong and this needs to be taken into account for the right dongle? I don't listen at high volumes at all, if that's relevant. I understand that certain dynamics in the music could need more power even at low volumes but I have no idea if the smartphone's analog output is powerful enough for it. On the other hands, I'd rather avoid a dongle so powerful that the first notch in the volume scale is too loud .

Thanks for reading and have a nice day!

PS:
The first dongle I tried had a AB13X DAC. The second had the CX31993 by TTKG.
My phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s gen 3 platform.
The KZ Zax iems I use have a 24ohm impedance and 113dB(/mW?) sensitivity.
I'm based in Australia. I shop on Aliexpress as local prices/offerings are just poor value .

If it doesn't have a DAC (digital-to-analog converter) what's supposed to come-out of the 3.5mm connection?

...It's going to have a DAC and if it has a headphone-out it has a headphone amp. (Possibly all built-into one chip.). Some DACs only have line-out so they can't drive headphones.

The Apple Dongle got a good review and it's inexpensive.

Sometimes crackles & pops are from the operating system interrupting but that should be less common on a phone which isn't doing as much multitasking as a computer.

P.S.
If your phone has a headphone jack, is there something wrong with it? Of course, cell phones (which are digital) have DACs too, for the speaker and for the headphone jack if there is one. And, an ADC for the microphone.

Hi, Welcome to ASR !

You will require a DAC to accomplish what you want.

As mentioned above, the Apple Dongle is a good choice to audition.

My phone does not have a headphone jack, only a USB C port. I was confused as well, but it turns out the phone's sound system is able to output an analog audio signal to the USB port from the phone's built-in DAC. This is the so-called Audio Accessory Mode of USB. The role of the dongle here is passive (or passthrough), and consists in mapping the relevant USB pins to the audio jack connections without any processing. You'd think I'd get more noise this way but it's the comple opposite !
Not all phones support this mode. In fact, I read it was deprecated, so maybe that's why I'm only finding DAC dongles? But why would my phone still support it...

The Apple dongle sounds worth a try, I would never have thought they made products compatible with android, I seem behind the times!

Thanks.

Thank you!
It sounds worth the try, thanks for pointing it out!

This might be passive, using AAAM (audio adaptor accessory mode);

A few comments say it "didn't work", which may also indicate same.

This doesn't mention conversion, so may also be passive;

Thank you very much!

The funny thing is I checked out the OnePlus dongle yesterday, as I found an old reddit thread mentioning it, but the description pictures showed DAC built in. Not on your link though! So I went to look again, it was this one, a different listing but similarly priced:

So I will order from your link. I can always return it for free.

If it doesn't work, I'll try the Apple dongle as it is the next cheapest solution.

Many thanks!

@audiobot I own two DAC-less headphone dongles, both work fine with my OnePlus 6T which supports analog audio output via Type-C.

One is the OnePlus Headphone adapter (discontinued on the OnePlus store but still readily available elsewhere)

The other is a Ugreen 70858.

Oh fantastic! Thanks a bunch.

Found the Ugreen! And it specifically says in the description that it doesn't have a DAC.

Thanks a lot!!

That may be an AliExpress error. Every USB-C to earphone-jack dongle on Ugreen’s own Amazon page has a DAC.

Hey, welcome to ASR. :)

From review comments, it seems to be DAC-less, i.e. using Audio Accessory Mode... which is why the ad and feedback says "Samsung not supported" and some users say the same, as most Samsung phones don't support AAM. Whereas these all support AAM, "HUAWEI Xiaomi Mi 10 Oneplus 7T pro".

Passive adapters! Oneplus 11 has a built in dac that sounds better than most consumer dacs. These passive adapters work great, are cheaper than active dongles (with dac), and are probably more durable. I've lost so many dongles, better to save money with cheap passive ones than loose or break expensive dongles. Not all phones have dacs built in. See what you can find about your phone. Oneplus 11 doesn't explicitly state this in the specs, but my old passive adapters worked and these do to. Great job as usual ugreen!

Pretty much any unbalanced CS43131 dongle you can find for cheap and which will give you 2V output. That's for mentioned planar IEM's that are in normal sensitivity range (105 db/mW) which is 8 dB less than your current ones. You will basically have same headroom like now trough DAC amp in the phone (05~06 V to which 2V is +11~12 dB). You might consider a BT dongle with LDAC and same DAC which start about 50 US $ (like Hiby W3 II 1.86 V output). Letshuoer S08 does benefit from EQ (both for treble peek and mid bass slam but leave a little bit a top of it as after all they are planar) and for that try using Wavelet (app).

Something like this (Aliexpress link) should be passive too.

Or this one, or this one.

Edit to add: I have a Xiaomi phone, but seemingly one which is too new to still support analog audio on its USB C port. Because I ordered each of those three out of curiosity and none of them work with it. :)

You can always search Amazon. They have a bunch of straight USC-C to 3.5mm headphone adaptors.

If you want one that works with a headset and wired for a mic, the Apple dongle does that, too.

USB-C is USB-C. Apple stuff is compatible.
