(I'm not sure if this is the correct category for this, but scrolling all of them, in the end this is about remotes that come with receivers. Feel free to change it to another category if needed)

I was using a Pioneer VSX-935 receiver until recently when I bought an Onkyo TX-RZ50. The Pioneer's remote is RC-974R, and it's basically the same remote that comes with the Onkyo (RC-972R) but with a better design. For example, the Onkyo's remote has the three quick access sound adjustments as Treble, Vocal and Bass, while the Pioneer's has Tone for both Bass and Treble (press once to access Bass, twice for Treble), Dialog and Subwoofer.

r/Onkyo - Pioneer RC-974R remote, can I change it so it behaves like Onkyo RC-972R?
Both are flawed when it comes to design, because ideally they should have Treble, Bass and Subwoofer. Anyone who has a home theater receiver and uses it for both movies and music knows that these days those are the three sound adjustments that matter the most, especially when it comes to the lower frequencies, because if you listen to music from the '80s, the bass is lacking, so you have to bump up the bass and the subwoofer, but if you leave them like that, and then you play anything from the last decade or two, your room will shake and your regular speakers will crackle or blow, or at best, have an unbearable boomy sound.

However, if I have to choose between both remotes, I choose the Pioneer's, because at least it has a button to access the subwoofer volume directly, instead of going through menus and several button presses like the Onkyo's.

When I got the Onkyo receiver, knowing that for the past few years all Pioneer audio gear was made by Onkyo, or 11 Trading Company, as it's called, I assumed that the Pioneer remote was going to work just fine with the Onkyo RZ50. But it turns out it doesn't work at all. There's not a single button in the Pioneer's remote that works with the Onkyo. Even if I switch the Onkyo's remote ID to 2 or 3, nothing. These remotes are almost identical and in fact just two numbers apart, that this is rather puzzling. I'm not trying to change a Sony remote control to work as a Panasonic one, these are two sister brands made by the same company, even if now Pioneer was sold or broke apart from 11 Trading Company, but when my receiver was made, Pioneer was still much part of the same company as Onkyo and shares even part of the GUI with their receivers.

I haven't taken the Pioneer's apart to see if there's an internal switch. There's none in the battery compartment. The manual for the VSX-935 has barely anything on the remote control, nothing that says anything about changing its operating code or similar.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Is this possible at all? If you see this same post on Reddit, it's because I've been looking for the answer for a while, but I only find people saying how to change the remote to control a TV set or a Blu-ray player, but nothing that fits what I need. And I know it's not a matter of this specific remote, because this Pioneer remote is a replacement that I bought from 11 Trading Company about a year ago when my then puppy destroyed the original one. In fact, I bought two, so I opened the other one, and it behaves the same way, meaning, it does nothing on the Onkyo. Added to that, I bought another cheaper remote on Amazon that looks exactly like the Pioneer but without the logo, but works fine with the Pioneer receiver, and it does nothing on the Onkyo.
