Given the importance of Pink Floyd, and the massive importance of music on ASR I thought it wouldn't be a bad thing to start a Pink Floyd thread

Thanks to positive comments from @Sal1950 I gave Division Bell, which I didn't much care for upon release for some reason, another chance and really dig it. It's like having a 'new' Floyd album to enjoy. Not a top 5 Floyd album in my book, but a good one nonetheless.

Nowhere close to top 5 on its artistic merits, but I've probably listened to it more than anything by PF save Wish You Were Here. Dave's in fine form, and the album sounds fantastic throughout. Also has the advantage of only having Roger Waters as a subject. Waters was by far the more talented songwriter, but the older I get, the less I want that malignant narcissist anywhere near the inside of my head.

Entirely agreed re Meddle. As for Dark Side it is outstanding I'm just tired of it.

I remember working at a Pink Floyd concert back in the 90s. They showed up with their quad PA system, which had three large arrays of speaker cabinets that were to be deployed in the top 20 rows of the football stadium seats. How did they get up there? The same way the Egyptians built the pyramids - raw physical human labor.

Usually, the rock band roadies lived on donuts, fast food, and beer, and their physique showed it. The roadies in charge of the quad system didn't have enough body fat between all of them to fry an egg. Those of us assigned to the "Quad Queens" detail knew we were in for a rough day as soon as they came off the tour bus.

Show was OK, and the load out was much easier since were carrying the speakers and amps down instead of up.

I still listen to their records from time to time. Wish You Were Here is a great record. Others vary from OK (Meddle, DSOTM) to interesting-but-not-really-worth-repeated-listening (Ummagumma) to disappointing (Animals) to unlistenable dreck (The Wall).

My favorite is Wish You Were Here, followed by Dark Side, Animals, Meddle, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. The summer of '73 when Dark Side hit, in was inescapable. Took me years to come back to it and appreciate it, really, because it had become like wallpaper from overplay on the LA radio stations.

Also love animals and the Final Cut,love the syd era,and the upto obscurred by clouds,not really a fan of the two “popular “ albums,that’s too my ears where they became a surrogate band maybe not a popular opinion,but I’ve got over a 1000 bootlegs of live shows,so I reckon I’m entitled to my opinion.

As a dyed in the wool Led Zeppelin/Deep Purple fan I think Pink Floyd are OK but I can rarely sit through a full album.
