the article said it was Greek; lots of Roman culture was based on the Greeks...

I dunno as I'm not an archeologist

I spent a bit on Google, couldn't find one.

in terms of visual aesthetics, it is easy to conceal modern digital systems (except for the big speakers we need for full range SQ)

I suspect the use of fancy lookin' amps & etc. is just a visual preference by some

my amp is hidden but my pre-amp and DACs/disc player are out in the open

Yep, I think it is Ephesus in Turkey. Mentioned in the Gospels. Also it is claimed that Mary's house is nearby. We visited there two years ago. Beautiful area.
From acoustic point of view the most famous amphitheatre is the one of Epidaurus in Greece, I have been there for a theater play in the summer and the actors can be heard at any point of a full audience without any electrical amplification.

My immediate thought on viewing this thread:

"These are all good examples of why I will never be satisfied with any listening room I can afford, so I'd best just concentrate on my headphone rig and save a lot of money and frustration."

It's Hierapolis, after restoration. (it rang a bell, but I cheated and had to double-check because of the inconsistencies ;) )
