I have a Pro-Ject Phono box the original one with usb its ancient discontinued and it sounds pretty good.
are there truly audible differences between say the Schitt Mani, The Emotiva and the newer recommended Pro-ject box

You'll hear differences in 'perceived' record surface issues depending on the overload margin of the phono stage, its behaviour when overloaded and the output of the cartridge. For example, a Mani with an already slightly hf-rough Ortofon 2M Red may not make for a happy sonic partnership and all for measurable reasons!

So on objective grounds, I'd still look at the Cabridge Duo and work outwards from that.

Frequency response differences can reach audible levels (RIAA correction errors)
Subsonic filters can differ (when present)
input capacitance can (and do) differ so specific cartridges can peak in the highest frequencies on different frequencies and levels.
Noise levels can differ.
Hum immunity can differ.

In other words the combination of cartidges and pre-amp can have a substantial impact on sound.

The interaction between cartridge and pre-amp usually is not included in reviews simply because there is too much variance.
Noise and distortion and deviation from RIAA however can be measured from a standard source.

Underlined is a piece of profound advice IMHO

Keep distortion & noise low, an hold to the RIAA EQ curve to within 1dB or better, and differences in sound will be very small, if any at all.

There is probably no greater area of synergy or dissonance than that between carts and preamps (to a much lesser degree arms and tables assuming they aren't intentionally exotic designs). That said, I don't think you are going to hear a ton of difference between the preamps you mentioned.
