Phono Cartridge Response Measurement Script

Once you have that installed, from Terminal run these commands:

Code:
pip3 install --upgrade pip

pip3 install librosa

pip3 install matplotlib

Librosa is dependent upon SciPy and NumPy so installing Librosa will also install those.

From there I use IDLE to edit and run the script. Let me know if that's enough to get you going.

Thanks,

the Terminal installs worked out fine, but did not manage to get anything from the IDLE. I saved the script in Text Editor unicode UTF-8, edited, in .py and used Python launcher but get this in Terminal. Sorry but I am really bad at this...

File "/Users/Thomas/Desktop/test.py", line 104

print(f"Length: {filelength}s")

^

SyntaxError: invalid syntax

Create a folder in Documents for the script and files. Call it Plots, Python, FR, whatever you like.

Open IDLE. Go to File, New. Paste the script code in to the new file. Save As, save to the folder you created above in Documents. Name it whatever you want .py.

Put the WAV file you want to plot in that same folder, modify the _FILE variable on the script to that filename, and go to Run, Run Module.

Thanks,

made it. I never saw the RUN menu in IDLE but now I got it. Just have to wait for the Denon record and make 96 kHz recordings.

Perfect. Grab the latest test code to do full range, and change the infoline in the script which is the plot name and file name.

I'll do some more; need to redo recordings in 96 kHz though.

What is IDLE? . I cannot get Anaconda and Spyder to run script without errors. I would like to try the method you just described

That's using the Python.org installation on Mac. I've never installed Python on Windows. Did the suggestion here not work?

Have I messed up something with Ipython 7.34.0 I have no idea what I am doing or have done

Conda is an executable, not a Python shell command. You enter that in Windows command prompt.

But you are not using python 7.34.0. The screenshot states you are using python 3.8.10.

Can you try this: Go to start, all apps, and open Anaconda Prompt (within Anaconda folder).

Untitled.jpg

Type conda install -c conda-forge librosa

If it installs correctly, go back to spyder on start in the same way I just showed above and see if it works.

If this all fails, message me and I'll walk you through uninstalling Anaconda and python properly. After that it should be super simple to set everything up correctly.

New script worked fine as well.

Excellent. if you change plotstyle = 1 you'll get the single scale you wanted.
Thanks,

yes I tried the various styles, good to have. The dual Y-axis one is the best to show both more detail of the frequency response (going from 5 to -30 dB) together with distortion.

(My suggestion was, if it possible to use the same ticks and grids for the distortion side so they align, e.g.

- 5 to -15
-10 to -30
-15 to -45
-20 to -60
-25 to -75
-30 to -90

Each tick on the Y2 scale would equal 3 dB.)

When I implemented the dual axis I didn't see any examples that scaled the ticks the same - it was a trick to get them to align at 0. Agree it'd be a good change.

I have a plastic SL-DD22 TT with a p mount Technics P24 cart and a SAS Neo Stylus with the Sapphire cantilever. It always sounded bright so I set it up and it measured it with the new script. I sure does have a elevated FR over 10 KHz. One frustration I am having is that no matter what capture rate I used 96 KHz or even 192 KHz I could not get the distortion measurements full scale. The script works fine on some other captures I did at 96 Khz. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I have some other p mount carts and stylus I want to try out but I want to get the script working.

The neo SAS sapphire variant stylii are eve more resonant than the boron stylus, so I'd expect a sharp drop after 20 kHz. It might be reflected in the distortion pattern.
