Maybe it would be helpful to consider practical matters, such as whether people will walk over it in their outside shoes, will it be exposed to bright- or direct sunlight, and whether there are pets to consider. And in some cases, maybe a less expensive machine-woven carpet made from harder-wearing fibers would be the best pick.

Random thought: I visited a famous mosque, and one of the points of interest was a white silk rug, a gift from the Ayatollah Khomeini. I recall thinking it looked very nice and plush, but of course such things are not designed to be trodden upon or used as a dog's bed so much as to cushion the knees of the faithful!

FWIW, a photo from 1998 of carpets being hand-woven in Urumqi, in China's Xinjiang region. I imagine that the process is pretty much the same everywhere.

Here are some absorption values for different type of carpets to demonstrate why I suggested thick pile carpets. Source.

The first thing to consider is if your speakers really do reflect off the floor to your ears. That will depend on their dispersion pattern and the distance you are from them.

Secondly there's a view that we are used to floor reflections and our brain takes them into account so there's no need to do anything.

I suggest the first thing you do is measure to see if any carpet that you have - or duvet even - makes a difference. Then listen to work out if you can actually hear any difference.

For what it's worth I use carpet - carpet tiles topped with an ordinary rug - but I've not done any measurements with them.

Unless you are using a specialised speaker like a CBT design, all speakers will emit sound that will reflect from the floor.

The speakers are Monitor Audio Silver RS6 (fronts) which are seven feet away from the listening position. The rears are no longer the Energy depicted but the original Monitor Audio RS1 bookshelf. I used a mirror and a laser pointer to find out where the reflection point would be but I don't think they disperse that wide. The post-it note indicates where it reflected from the tweeter. I can try to measure how off-axis that is. Note the wall is not fully painted as though there isn't much height, I was considering some some of diffusion panelling like wood tambour.

Buy any carpet you like.

Practical acoustics dictates not stressing over room decor. The carpet won't do anything the midrange and lower, where problems are.

Here's a view from the listening position taken with wide angle. The post-it notes indicate where the tweeter could be reflecting. I take no credit for the window installation. This is a very old house.

Ha! Check the chart I posted to learn how wrong you are.

All the car pets I've *ever* had did not absorb anything. All of them, however, exuded various types of noxious gas. I haven't charted it, but my theory is that the longer the trip the more gas hence there is probably an hitherto unexplored vector that may explain a number of inexplicable vehicle accidents. [spontaneous bailouts, loss of consciousness etc.]

I've bought a number of rugs from ecarpetgallery.com. I like that they provide a good description of each rug, including pile height and type of construction.

I wonder what (if any) acoustic differences natural fibers have vs synthetic fibers. Most mass-produced carpets/rugs these days are synthetic fibers, though all of my rugs are wool.

Because of their more open surface, cut pile carpets
are generally better sound absorbers than loop pile
carpets;
• Sound absorption is reduced if the carpet backing
is too impermeable (wool carpets mostly have permeable
backings which assist sound absorption);
• An underlay can contribute to the absorption of
sound, as long as the carpet backing is permeable;

Great site and filtering options! I can totally see what types work. AND THERE IS A CANADIAN WAREHOUSE.

I understand the chart and your reasoning. Designing a room doesn't require certain decor. You can choose one thing and compensate with another.
