Perlisten Owners' Lounge - Discuss all things Perlisten.

I just moved to a new home with a smaller listening room. I had Magnapan 3.7x’s, a JL Audio CR1 crossover and 2 Perlisten D12S’s. So I just bought the S5M’s with dedicated stands. My question is should I run the S5M’s sealed or unsealed? My subs are sealed so would I have better integration with sealed speakers? I like sealed speakers. I listened to 15 ohm Chartwell LS/5A’s for 44 years before the Maggie’s.
By the way, a single D12S blew away 2 REL S510’s. With two D12S’s my old room measured flat to 10 hz.
Should you leave your S5m’s ported? Well they were designed that way for better 2 channel listening and better bass response. If you cross them over at 80 to a sub you will not have any real phase issues with the ports—so why seal them? Try them both ways and really concentrate, perhaps take notes, on listening. I would leave them ported though.

Above reviews measure what is good about Perlisten and bad about B&W.
I'm not sure if I agree on 2 Ohm requirements since my Emotiva XPA3 Differential AMP doesn't formally support below 4 Ohms but pumps a whopping 450 watts per channel and is clear and presents with authority no distortion.

2ohm???? You talking about B&W??

Thought I would ask some advise from the Perlisten aficionados. I currently have some Goldenear Triton Reference as well as the Reference center. Used in a home theater and 2 channel listening. Other equipment includes (4) SVS 17 Ultra Subs, Marantz AV10 receiver (running Dirac ART) and Buckeye amps. It's a 7.4.4 system. I am considering the S7T and S7C. I enjoy the Goldenear, but am thinking of going back to passive speakers. I have plenty of power, subs and room treatment. I am really wondering what my biggest sound impresison would be by changing. I know the Goldenear can be a bit directional, especially the center channel. I appreciate anyones thoughts.

Have you read James Larson’s in depth review?

Discusses specifics nicely and provides CTA 2034 measurements.

Yes read this back in 2021, I will go back for a refresher when it gets closer to purchase time. I also demo'd them myself so I already know they are great and will definitely be my next set of speakers. Sound stage is incredible. My Emotiva's drove them no issues sounded better than my 804 D3's for sure with just a few days of tweaking.

I have a par of GE Triton 2s. The frequency response of these is probably not nearly as linear as the References, but I changed to a pair of Revel f208s and I was quite surprised with how much better I thought the Revels sounded.

Like you alluded to, I found the Triton 2s to have a very narrow sweet spot. I could move my head left and right and would notice a change in the tonality. Not so with the Revels. They did not noticeably change when I moved my head around and they sounded much more natural to me overall.

I suspect the difference between your GE speakers and the Perlistens will be less because from the measurements I can find on either out there, they both appear to be well measuring speakers.

I would like to see some more accurate 3rd party measurements of the Perlistens. Audioholics also seems to have somewhat of a comfy relationship with some brands, some more than others (Perlistens, RBH). While they do seem very good, I withhold making a strong judgement on this brand until I see some objective reviews from some other sources.

Do you know of any others that you could link here?

Well there is an inherent bias when you get the speakers for free

Math is math. Are you suggesting they lied about the measurements? Audiophile had a review as well with CEA 2034 measurements. Do you have the ability to search the web too?

Kind of the point of including CEA 2034 numbers as is it allows for peer review and accurate recommendations.

I don’t doubt perlisten are excellent speakers and would like replace my best system with all perlisten. But the fact that Gene admitted to asking perlisten to sponsor his home build and they sent him the S series speakers - so he got them for free - hence the inherent bias. It human nature.

Their main reviewer doesn't have that cozy relationship and doesn't have RBH or Perlisten speakers. The owner has had RBH as his main speakers since before 2010, going through several iterations that were not formally reviewed or free. They don't play the typical publication game, just like here.

Again. The CEA 2034 measurements makes it available for peer review. Plus have you visited perlisten website to just look at all the reviews you can view that they have posted? Did you visit the Stereophile review also providing CEA 2034 measurements and many others.
At some point you have to look at all the positive reviews and stop doubting James larson’s honesty

It it’s free, I’ll take 3. Upon receipt of free merchandise, there is potential bias.

Ok I get that you are saying there could be potential bias: Got it.

My point is when you publish CEA 2034 measurements THOSE serve as a truth serum of allowing peer review. So bias is offset by the ability to get “caught” by other readers/competitors so it is better to state the facts from the measurements.

I understand what you are saying. I just don’t condone the potential conflict of interest but also understand that this is common practice in the world we live in with YouTube. And was common practice even before with reviewers who can buy the reviewed item at a substantial discount.

Btw, I look forward to talking to Lars every year at Axpona. What a great guy he is and that sub from last year with the stack of 8” woofers was very impressive. It’s right up there with my gothams.
