I chose the name "periscopio" for the project. In optical periscopes, 45-degree surfaces reflect images inside waveguides. In my project, 45-degree surfaces reflect sound waves; with pairs of 45-degree surfaces, I reverse the direction of the sound waves in the folded waveguides. The code CL100 recalls my signature, and the total cost is less than €100. The goal of the project is to build a pair of speakers with excellent sound quality and only €100 worth of materials.
Periscopio (CL100) is a compact floorstanding single-driver speaker with dimensions of 210 x 210 x 1100 mm. It can accommodate speakers up to 3". Its footprint is similar to a floor-standing transmission line.
The front emission is direct, therefore directional.
The rear emission is applied to a compression chamber with six folded rigid PVC waveguides glued to the underside.
The design is simple; there is no need to precisely match the resonances of the speaker and the waveguide; the cabinet is neutral with respect to the speaker and the listening room. The length of the waveguides is calculated based on the speed of sound in air; the speaker's electroacoustic parameters are not required.
The waveguides' resonant frequencies are evenly distributed across an octave with partially overlapping peaks; no sound-absorbing material is used.
The six waveguides emit coherent secondary wavefronts. in counterphase with the front emission of the speaker. The secondary fronts are delayed between 4 and 8 msec and emitted at different points in the space. This multiple emission increases the breadth of the sound image, optimizes interaction with the listening environment, and reduces listening fatigue.
The stand can oscillate at subsonic frequencies, isolating the compression chamber from the floor in the audible range.
The new website pages are now only in Italian. With the time saved from copying and pasting with Google Translator, I have taken more care with the construction instructions. In the next few days, I will add posts with the paragraphs from the web page.
Thank you for your attention.
