PC finally given up the ghost

An hour or so with the terminal open in Ubuntu. sudo this, sudo that. Still no browser, although allegedly Firefox is part of the software anyway.
At least it's keeping me from under my wifes feet.
Although she is best placed to listen to this lovely Dylan bootleg on Qobuz!

Have tou tried booting the machine off a memory stick with Ubuntu on it? Or even one of the simpler distros as a test.

XUbuntu is better for old machines like this. It's Ubuntu with the XFCE desktop, which uses a lot less RAM and CPU than normal Ubuntu.
I recommend version 20, since the latest version 22 seems to have worse performance.
