Palmer ORBIT 11 Cardioid Coaxial 3-way studio monitor (MSRP 799€/899$)

I know that situation myself. Would recommend a smart power switch as well. I personally use one that I can switch by foot. In combination with a monitor controller like the monicon series I'm more than happy with that solution.
Sorry. I didn’t really understand what you meant about the smart power switch. Maybe it’s because I’ve never used something like that before. If the speaker is turned on and I switch off the power strip that the speaker’s power cable is connected to, would that cause any problems? I’d really appreciate it if you could explain based on orbit 11 :)

Hey Guys,

love to see the discussion and interest! Amir and I are in contact and we're trying to send him a pair as soon as possible. As the availability in the us usually takes a little longer than in europe we're trying to find the fastest way for you guys.

Thanks also for the kind words I read in here. If somebody is ever close to our headquarters hit me up and I can provide a tour through our showroom, labs (semi-anechoic chamber, etc.) and the rock'n'roll library.

In the meantime I'll try to answer most questions as best as possible. Please bear with me, when this sometimes takes some time.

1. does Orbit11 have 3 amps, one for each driver? seems obvious but the specs keep mentioning 1000W and nothing else.

2. When going AES, the latency of the unused DA converter isn't there anymore. Does this mean Orbit is now processing at a little lower latency than 4,1ms ?

3. care to explain how the cardioid front baffle and the side event work ? mid and high drivers in a separate box than the sealed woofer?

4. I read somewhere: 60 months warranty, is that the case? (I'm in Europe) Filling a form at Palmer required?

1. Yes. 2x 250W, 1x 500W
2. Yes, the latency is a little less when AES is used as input. We estimate it's around 0.3ms less. But will test it for you.
3. Yes they are in seperated sealed boxes. I will post an inside view for you.
4. Yes. Palmer always grants 5 years warranty. This would be handled through your dealer, which will most likely than contact us.
1. This appears to be a closed enclosure for the bass drivers (fine), and and slit vents on both sides to serve cardioid for the coax (fine)..
2. I do see no vents for cooling the amps: what about that?
1. Correct. Closed enclosure for the bass drivers, and and slit vents on all four sides to serve cardioid for the coax.
2. The Amplifier and the Power supply ist cooled via the aluminum housing. We use the whole enclosure for it.

  • What is above the AES output?
  • Does the PAD work for AES inputs also? (Don't want to have really loud sounds if you accidentally output a full-range signal to the speakers - such as accidentally going to the wrong SNAP button on a RME interface which may reset the AES output to 0)
  • Can you mount from the bottom also? I see four holes in the diagrams in the manual.
  • Is there any sort of future room-calibration ability or firmware update ability?
  • Is there somewhere in the USA to send for warranty (or out of warranty) issues?
  • Any way to turn the lights lower or off on the front/top of the speakers (some speakers have settings to switch the LED lights down/off)
1. It´s Service Port for service Duty only. We try to keep products easy serviceable for sustainability and longevity reasons.
2. Yes, the Pad controls the AES input Signal as well
3. No, the screws on the bottom are holding the SMPS in place, but you can remove the Feets and cloud use the mounting holes for a custom solution
4. No
5. The front light is always on, as it is the indicator for power status and the limiter (if active). The top lights of the control panel turn off automatically after 20s

Did you apply any smoothing to the Freaqueny responce graph?
Yes, the graph is smoothed.

One goody for you: That is the inside of Orbit 11
There you see how we packed everything in the very limited space of the enclosure. And you can see highlighted the sealing wall between the mid-/hi-drivers and the enclosure for the woofers on the sides.

Hi KVR. Usually that shouldn't be a big problem. I use something like this:

These are £694 each in the UK and stock is expected in 3 weeks.

Will be very interested to hear how they perform. I really like the KH120’s a lot but I would like something with a little more bass extension. I do a lot of audio editing so self noise and thd are also hugely important for my work. If they can at least match my KH120’s in these regards that will be seriously impressive at this price point!

Honestly, you can't build this for what they're charging. The Palmer stuff (and also LD) is generally well built and designed from the stuff I've used over the years. This could be the bargain of the year. Looking forward to seeing them on the bench.

holy. i want this if it actually measures well.
guess ill prepare trading in my r3 metas

Thanks a lot Flo ! that's a lot of cool infos.
I suppose the site should dispay the 250 x 250x 500w power capacities, very impressive.

Curious about the real latency number in AES, I guess it should be samples as it may vary between different sample rates.

I have a big 40m2 room (3m ceilings) connected to another 40m2, so huge room. Curious to try it, or there may be a bigger model coming out ;)

These looks very interesting yes, on perfect almost perfect! Well except for the looks, they need less orange and more wood.

I love the looks, size and price. Getting two 8" woofers in a small sealed enclosure to -3db of 28hz is like having a SVS 3000 Micro subwoofer.

I imagine the distortion in the low end on these will be huge, cones moving like crazy but not much sound output.

Huge displacement means a lot of sound output.

Rather, I figure that because the stiffness of the air inside is high because of the low volume, displacement will be limited even if some of that is compensated by the onboard power.

I understand that the disadvantage of being cardioid is low sound output?

Cardioid doesn't have to be low spl, we use it in live sound all the time. It just happens to be low output when you try to do it in a small box.
Ok, I also understand that for that price you can't expect miracles.

But I think the combination is interesting: a 3-way cardioid coaxial speaker with this amplification power at this price... plus an aluminum casing. It certainly catches the eye.
