Palmer ORBIT 11 Cardioid Coaxial 3-way studio monitor (MSRP 799€/899$)

As this is a very interesting speaker, I would really like to see a full set of measurements. Sending one sample to Amir is heroic, but shipping costs, fees, ****(don't say that word) would not be necassary, as there are Klippels around here in Europe, even in Dresden, not?

I would even buy a pair and drop ship it (if the producer would'nt), if someone here in Europe, prefarable GE/DE, would do the Klippel measurements.

I thought link was provided to US dealer so local stock is available.

One and only offer I found on quick search was delivery starting Feb 24 th ... in the country of origin...

For that matter, I just broke down and ordered a pair, and I'm just one state down from Amir. Butif he's getting one ir two from Palmer, that's even better
Take one for the team :): Send one of yours to @amirm .. I must say I am tempted .. Very much so...

@UffdiePalme :
This appears to be a closed enclosure for the bass drivers (fine), and and slit vents on both sides to serve cardioid for the coax (fine)..
I do see no vents for cooling the amps: what about that?

A few questions:
  • What is above the AES output?
  • Does the PAD work for AES inputs also? (Don't want to have really loud sounds if you accidentally output a full-range signal to the speakers - such as accidentally going to the wrong SNAP button on a RME interface which may reset the AES output to 0)
  • Can you mount from the bottom also? I see four holes in the diagrams in the manual.
  • Is there any sort of future room-calibration ability or firmware update ability?
  • Is there somewhere in the USA to send for warranty (or out of warranty) issues?
  • Any way to turn the lights lower or off on the front/top of the speakers (some speakers have settings to switch the LED lights down/off)
Looks like a great speaker though!

Until today, I’d never heard of Palmer (a German pro audio company). Never seen them in Mix magazine or in any US retailer.

Then I read a post here about their Orbit 11 monitor and the more I read about it from their site, it strains credulity that a $899 gets you an active, cardioid studio monitor with an AES digital input, 400W total system power, flat 28-28kHz frequency response and a die-cast aluminum cabinet.

For mixing or listening to stereo and surround audio coming from a computer, this seems to be a perfect monitor.

Obviously, even with 9 of them in surround, you still need a sub unless you can distribute the low bass evenly to all 18 eight inch woofers in the system. Still, they roll off hard below 28Hz. This is for another posting, though…

From the specs, this system seems to outperform anything on the market by a significant amount for the price. It’s making all the $5k/piece monitors reviewed here seem drastically overpriced and lame.

Unless this is a grift, this seems like the monitor to buy for any small studio. Add several of your favorite subwoofers for duty below 100Hz and, if it performs as advertised, you have a truly killer system.

If this speaker shows great performance even in 3rd party measurement, I guess it could dominate the market under $2000.

I cannot wait to see the detailed measurement data by Amirm, including Spinorama, MD and compression in higher SPL.

I'm glad to see that cardioid speakers are catching on and more manufacturers are entering the market.
That can only be good for those that want them.

Dimensions & weight
Width 217 mm / 8.54"
Height 293 mm / 11.54"
Depth 292 mm / 11.50"
Weight 13.9 kg / 30.58 lb

these look insane, if they just add a version with replaceable amps for like 100-200 dollar higher base price, just in case your amp dies, i think you can call this the new king of desktop speakers

Just sharing our online available measurements here again as some of you have problems seeing it: View attachment 510387View attachment 510388View attachment 510389View attachment 510390View attachment 510391

Of course happy to do the Klippel measurement.

Regarding the manual and domestic use: As we are a german brand in europe there are certain legal things we have to put in.
In the user manual THD for f>100Hz is 0.4% at 84 dB @ 1m
But in the graph we see distortion below -55db for f>100Hz at 84 dB @ 1m which is 0.18%
Could you please explain the difference.

UPD: I added 2 graphs with TDH calculated by ChatGPT just for fun))

The two cardioid slots look like those on the D&D or the Geithain,

They might look similar, but frequency range and directivity seemingly work out differently, solely judged by the measurements. Isobaric graphs and crossover frequencies suggest that full cardioid behavior is achieved between 300 and 500Hz, which is very beneficial for reverb tonality and constant directivity. It presumably does not do anything against room modes and bass problems, though, in case some people associate ´cardioid´ with tight and nonexistence of boomy bass.

Would not expect the latter from such a compact enclosure and decent amount of power, though, particularly because such coaxial midrange cones should not be driven into areas of crazy excursion, which a bass cardioid inevitably would require.

@UffdiePalme are there any THD measurements at 90 or 95dB available? This would help judging the midrange cone´s behavior. Nevertheless a brilliant concept, congrats!
