We have 1.2 gigabit service from our cable company (Comcast). Alas, as they are prone to do, they are jacking up the rates. So I decided to check again with our phone company to see if they have fiber next to us. Before Comcast, we were using their ADSL Line which cost $120 for 15 mbit/sec. Imagine my surprise when I checked today what they offer:

The schmucks have lowered the service down to 3 mbit/second! And still want that much money!!! Plus fees no less. No wonder the cable company feels comfortable to jack up our rates. We would be in stone ages if we had stayed with the phone company.....

DSL sometimes gets more bandwidth if you're closer to the box/switch I think, but that was pretty typical when dsl was the only choice here (aside from almost as bad satellite), 1-2 Mbps wasn't particularly unusual for many I know, altho I was better off, even sometimes up to 6-8 at my place. Town now has some better ISP options, makes me wonder who stuck with dsl and what it costs now (altho suspect more in the $60-70 range at a guess, used to be around 45 I think).

60 a month here. I remember that about 10 years ago 25 a month was reasonable and 35 a month expensive.
In my country prices have gone up because the companies that provide internet lost a lot of revenue that they used to have from phones over land lines.

holy sh*te

1000/100 fiber, one fixed phone number (unused, because why...), one mobile (G5 with 500GB DL, no call limits) and HD TV (200+ channels) cost me around 80€ as a package deal

We have Xfinity (Comcast) in Vancouver, Washington (metro Portland, Oregon): unlimited data "up to 400 Mbps" for $50/month. I just did a check and it's running at 432 Mbps.

The other day I got voicemail from them with some offer that would "cut my bill in half" but I haven't looked into it. Right now, we're investigating internet over 5G from Mint, using it on a new iPad Pro to see how it goes.

I generally feel like I'm being gouged but am never quite sure. For one thing I live in Canada, famous for its high Internet and mobile charges. Service, however, is pretty good if expensive. I'm using Rogers services for Internet, mobile, and TV.

I get a "package" including TV as well as Internet that costs Cdn$170/mo. including "up to" 1 gigabit download. It looks like I could get 1.5 gigabyte for C$110 2.5 gig for $125. This is my result this morning from Speedtest.net ...

Blimey that's so expensive, and such a poor speed.

I know what it's like though, it took until earlier this year for my road to get anything better than 4M ADSL. Luckily we went straight to FTTP, for about half that price (and I pay over the odds for an ISP with a clue, fixed address, IPv6).

Why are you folk across the pond paying so much for your broadband/fibre?, here in very rural Scotland I pay £17.99 /$22 a month for 70mbps unlimited use.

I pay 25usd per month for 250Mbps no limits. In expensive Norway. Have no idea why I would need more than 250Mbps, it covers heavy applications and traffic from my home office to “work”. Everyday browsing, downloads of music or film, play music and streaming and Netflix.

For 23usd/month I get all 30 or so tv channels of which I view maybe 5 or 6.

We pay 300DKK ~US$43 for a supposed 1Gb/1Gb, but it normally sits around 550Mb/300Mb.

Population density and lack of competition. Here in Canada, the 2 largest cable internet providers cover about 60% of the population and in rural markets are pretty much the only choice. They now want to merge.

I have Comcast internet and cable TV. About 6 months ago they tried increasing our monthly cost. At the time I had their 200 Mbit service and their ultimate TV package with some premium channels. We have been Comcast customers for 17 years. I got online and signed up for a new 1.2 Gbit internet package and the same TV package with even more premium channels for about $20 less than what we were paying and about $80 less than their proposed new rates. I had to sign up for 24 months but I have no plans on moving so it was a no brainer. I had to buy a new modem (I don't like renting equipment) and upgraded our WiFi mesh routers at the same time.

Good grief, I didn't know a lot of people had it this bad. Frontier FIOS 500/500 $50 (measuring 513/455 right now, it doesn't vary much, spec'd at 450-500 each way), plus $10 for phone, $63.26/mo with tax/fees. 1G (940M) service is $70 (hey, it dropped $5), 2G $150.

I suppose as 5G service rolls out more, prices will be more competitive in more places, and basically no installation needed (plug in a box).
