Opinions on GR Research NX-Studio

It’s an attractive cabinet. The published measurements are smoothed but don’t look particularly impressive nor horrible once you actually are listening in stereo.

For the kit price, if looks are not an issue, you will likely get better measured performance with the more commonly recommended speakers here. For the asking non kit price, I don’t think they look the part nor do they have the SOTA measurements I would want at that price point.

The kit isn’t poorly priced, but it’s a hefty premium for the fully assembled one unless you LOVE the look.

Measurements at the link, note the Y-axis.

Agree...

For less money you can get KH120s with dramatically better measurements and the amps are included.

This isn't the worst speaker I've ever seen for the money by any means and the open baffle thing might sound pretty nice in person, but it's not particularly competitive as a "studio monitor".

How many of these damn woofers did this guy buy in 2005?

Did he get a lifetime supply in a raffle or something?

You can see the prices for his drivers elsewhere on his page...so you know what you're paying for those 2nd order crossover components and his design efforts.

He's always running out of his woofers. Also, these are not the same as the $30 m130 woofer that he's been selling for 20+ years. Though I'm not sure a copper phase plug is worth $100 extra.

I don’t know, but every comment I read about the NX series from actual owners is always highly positive. Experienced people that owned higher priced well known brands seem impressed. You would definitely need subs though for full range.

I just upgraded my subs to GR open baffle subs to match my NX Oticas. Two 12 inch servo woofers per side driven by Rythmic amps. Completely new level of performance compared to my 15” sealed Ultimax subs. Not cheap, but I highly recommend those subs to pair with the studios. But you have to build the cabinets, finish and wire them, part of the experience and fun for me.

I should add that if you’re interested in actual studio work, maybe better off to go with monitors specifically built for that purpose. The NX studios are great for music enjoyment though.

Horizontal directivity looks messy above 3k. And for an open baffle that small I wonder how the low end performs. Unfortunately, the published graphs start at 200Hz (and there's no distortion graph) ...

The woofer is sealed separate from the tweeter, I like that tweeter better than other types I owned including RAAL ribbons, scanspeak domes, KEF dome and a handful of compression drivers I own. It’s my subjective opinion, I didn’t notice any issues from not so good directivity specs. Maybe in a totally untreated room without careful set up I could hear some kind issue, but no I don’t.

The M165NQ also has a different coating on the cone, surround slightly different and a larger magnet.

I had a pair built two years ago. The speakers don't have the fit and finish of my previous speakers as in TAD Evolutions Ones, Evolution Acoustics MM Micro One,
Klipsch Cornwall IV, Modified Magnapan LRS+ (but close), Martin Logan Renaissance ESL 13A, Paradigm Persona 3F, Von Schweikert Audio VR-5 SE (Upgraded my VSA), George Short of North Creek Music's Fibonacci Technologies Vaya Ribbon and Kii Audio Three. But they are very nicely made. But I am now off the merry go round and distraction of chasing audio at 61 yrs old. I now use the NX-Studio with Lyngdorf TDAI-3400, custom Windows audio computer dual booted from W10/Euphony Audio with a mess of medium expensive cables (oh the horror) and a three HDPlex power supplies. I use these speakers for audio and video playback in a 2.1 system using an 18" Rythmic F18 Direct Servo sub.

My speakers look very nice and the sound can be very detailed with the open baffle tweeter. The speakers are awesome at this price point. Unless you want to crank them up really loud or have crappy equipment, they can make you very happy. I have no problem playing these loud but not excessive.

I have been an audiophile for 47 years. I have scaled high end audio with over 100k system before. I am now more content with my audio system and I quit searching. Do I think of other speakers? Sometime but I can stay with this pair for the next 20 years and not miss anything but FOMO.

If I were in California still I would pick these up NX-Oticas below.

There is a nice looking pair of NX-Studio on AudioMart now as well for 2500.00.

Danny has built awesome speakers and he is a really good guy to talk to and work with. He makes himself super available. I 100% endorse Danny and his products. People might not agree with everything he says but I bet those people never made so many people happy with their products.

EDIT: Clarification and honesty... The 100k price in equipment was new prices. But I bought almost all of it used. I probably had 65k invested.

Jeez, I guess the seller edited up the price to $3000.00 now, probably after some interest. Hate that.

It is worth getting these speakers measured. Something like the JBL Studio 530 doesn’t look amazing on axis, but once you get the PIR, it’s great because of how everything sums up.

The TAD’s are a clearly in a while different price point!

Does RoomPerfect show you what your before and after in room measurements look like?

Danny has had inconsistently measured performance on his speakers here. Some are great and some, not so much. Making people happy with snake oil isn’t something that ASR really supports and there has been more personality friction.

Still good to hear that these speakers are making you happy!

Jon L: I think you might be mistaken. Those have been 3000.00 for weeks. But those are the NX-Oticas, not the NX-Studio. Much bigger speaker and a really good price depending on build quality. Those are the ones I said I would get if I was to go looking again after owning the NX-Studios for about 1.5 years. No build time is a big plus.

These are the NX-Studios for sale.

terryforsythe: I had the originals not the latest. I really like Andrew Jones designed equipment. I wish I had had a better experience with them to give a really good opinion. I had them in way too small of a space but good electronics. Dartzeel NHB-108 power amp with Lampizator Golden Gate 2 DAC. What I can say is I had wished I never sold them. I probably would have stayed with those. But I was changing out equipment like a crazed clown at that time. I have nothing to say bad about them. But I was hamstrung by probably 50% with room setup and size. But they did have a very accomplished sound signature and a lot of sparkle in a good way. You could tell that was a very well made piece of kit. I paid about 16k for them back in 2016. Now that I have more space it would be great to be rocking that system. I had zero complaints. I did take the same electronics when I had more room and use them with the VSA. I think that was the best I ever got my system sounding. The detail in the air was eerie and addictive. I can get some of that effect now with the NX-Studio because of that open baffle tweeter. That I why I said I would really like to have the NX-Oticas I linked to. I have hear them in Tulsa and damn they sounded good with tubes and a TT.
