I have said this for years....

There is "Testing" and finding out limits.

Then there is listening, where in many cases those limits never come into play OR are audible.

Then there are a small group in this forum, that with never having "Used" a product that tests mediocre, equating that with being audible, but have no actual experience, other than measurements.

I am very objective mostly, but think some can not relate what is audible versus test bench figures.

Agreed, but to some, it may be a matter of principle, not "audible" or not. For example, many Denon ex owners would not buy the X3800H not because they thought the lower SINAD would sound audibly worse than their older models, but just did not like the fact that Denon picked a DAC IC that clearly has much worse specs than the AKM one that they had been using for a few years and had good bench measurements. Marantz owners might not mind as much as many of them bought in to the marketing info about the so called Marantz sound.

With Onkyo's "limp mode", it is the same thing, more about principle though in this case it is worse because it is actually quite possible that some owners might actually been affected by it without knowing it audibly because even if they had the unit running in limp mode, the lower rail voltage's effect even if audible, may not be noticeable without being compared in quick AB tests using media contents that have good dynamic range, etc..
 
@amirm Too bad you could not do a propper test.

FYI for all others who is considering this AVR: I'm a RZ30 owner and very happy with it, I'm not a hard core "nerd" either so, it does what it supposed and if you can get one for a good price, it will be a very good value for money and then some.

It is regrettable you do not explain what a 'proper test' should be.
 
Amir follows established pattern for measurements, and in general no other site will do even close in terms of review accuracy for AVRs. Amir has done for AVRs more than other reviewers combined and list of AVRs reviewed on this site is probably longer than a list of any serious (measurement based) reviews of all the other outlets combined.

The flaw discovered in the test is real, so each has to deal with this finding in the way they want. I don't buy equipment that has not been tested and confirmed that it works as advertised. But that's just me. Obviously anyone free to spend their budget the way they want. This particular unit offers nothing exceptional or distinguishing. It is apparently "well" priced, but as we all know there is no free lunch. You get what you pay for after all.
 
Thank you very much. How about my other question about your typical THD+N ratio vs frequency, did you always do those measurements with the preout at 2 V, or not, the graphs never show what the output levels were.
I keep the levels the same throughout the tests as if it is a DAC.
 
I was just thinking of a workaround to the power limit software on the Onkyo/Integra/Pioneer models.

Buy an inline power meter that plugs into an outlet and see if you find a hard limit to the power consumption. They run under $50, a small amount compared to cost of the Onkyo.

Limited wattage is 32 wpc vs. 162 in normal operation. Add 50 watts or so and it's 80 watts vs. 210 watts for normal operation.

It might vary in multi channel playback. OTOH if you never reach 80 watts the extra power is not needed. A power cycle with white noise could also be a test for normal power.
 
Since 1 year I am a happy user of a RZ 30. I voted "fine".
Let me explain my point : real life experience do matter.
The RZ 30 is replacing a Yamaha RX-A700 and it can do what the Yamaha was not able to.
In my home, the AVR amplifier is driving two large column speakers and the center channel.
Each LR speaker is full band, bi-amped because of the two 8 inch woofers.
For the movies the sub channel is routed to the LR speakers.
The RZ 30 solved two problems limited by the Yamaha:
1) The power amplifier section is capable of properly driving the large column speakers.
The only limit to the sound level is my neighbors well being and not a never happening (in my usage) limp mode!
2) With Dirac activated the high frequencies sounds are crystal clear which was not the case with Yamaha YPAO.
When I received this AVR I was close to return it as the out of the box sound was awful.
Hours of calibration an adjustments solved this issue.
A second issue was an abnormal noise floor when some sound corrections (I.e. bass, treeble) were activated.
This issue has been solved by a firmware update.
For my second home I am planning to buy a RZ31 when available.
Thank you for Amir for showing that the pre-amp section is working very well.
Regarding the Amp test section, Amir would be wise to add a real life listening test with a 4 Ohm speaker difficult to drive (I.e.: B&W, Focal...).
 
The sin is that there is no indication when the power limit is activated.

Amir's testing has to stress the products more than the typical use cases, otherwise the tests would be worthless. Also means that sometimes the tests reveal a flaw where you have to evaluate if it is relevant for you.

Based on my anecdotal experience with RZ50 then you can go very loud without any issues. If the power limit activated I never noticed...
 
The power limiting alone is enough to make my blood boil.
Thanks again for the review. So important to have someone identifying such fundamental flaws that otherwise purchasers would have no knowledge of - just find their device is inexplicably failing to deliver the volume they were expecting.

And now not just individual devices to strike off the list - but it would seem a whole manufacturing alliance.
 
@antcollinet: What would you then buy in this price range, including Dirac?
Denon 3800 - I have one. Don't use DIRAC though

And admittedly you have to pay extra for the DIRAC - but it is no point having DIRAC included with a design this broken.
 
Some enter the network address of their Onkyo with admin as the username and admin as the password and see the basic websetup. What is needed is entering the address followed by /websetup and then entering ciuser for the username and ciuser for the password. Then, the advanced websetup will come up.

Clicking on the clipboard at the top right of the advanced websetup will bring up current status including the state of the amps. It is here that one can see if the receiver amps are in Protect mode. If so, “Current Protect” will be displayed. Clicking on “Clear Protect” will take it out of Protect mode and display “Not Protected.” Unfortunately, no manual for any Onkyo model has any information concerning the functions of the advanced websetup.

It is a shame that this information was not provided to Amir so that he could check the status of the receiver throughout his testing of the RZ30 and clear the Protect mode if engaged to see if it would reengage with continued testing.

A friend of mine who is not technically inclined purchased this from a dealer. The dealer warned him to not set the volume at high level. Meaning the dealer knew of the issue with the “protect” mode.
 
I bought the Onkyo RZ30 after reading this review that almost scared me out of it. I agree, it’s an oversight to not have this feature published in the manual. This is a is a purposeful design feature and not flaw in my book. This protects both the receiver and speakers from harm. If you’re driving very inefficient or power hungry speakers that are lower than 8ohms, this is not the receiver for you. This is why I try Not to spend a lot on surround sound receivers and only use them as preamps, because they become outdated in a few years full of marketing junk. Stick with a seperate clean two channel setup for music.

The flaw comes in the way it operates. No indication to show it has entered limp mode -and no way to reset it without removing power completely.
