Well I got about 25% off the set. I like the velvet akm DAC. I had plans to maybe buy one of those regardless so this saves that. I also like that they are designed for passive cooling since I will likely end up putting them in some kind of rack. Hopefully they last a long time. If not I get to blame the wife and ignore her input on replacements.Pretty "meh" to me for the money.
When they were first announced I was intrigued by the integrated amp version. I thought these components looked great on the outside, then I saw the insides and was very disappointed given their prices. They look no better on the inside than your average $1k AVR. And at their prices both the preamp and integrated amp should include Dirac Live Full Bandwidth IMO. Its also inexcusable not to include XLR connections at those prices. I feel like the meters and basic version of Dirac add at least $1k to the combo.
YMMV...
Quad 33 and Quad 3 can kind of act like a loudness function with its Tilt function. That being said there really isn't much out there.
So he has two problems with the Onkyo - first, he doesn't think the sound staging and imaging are that good compared to an Audiolab - This is something any competent amplifier has zero effect on. This is the problem when you don't compare blind, don't level match, don't have fast switching comparison between the two amps and just rely on your memory. You get mistaken impressions.Quad 33 and Quad 3 can kind of act like a loudness function with its Tilt function. That being said there really isn't much out there.
New completely subjective review just dropped.

Should be getting mine in a few days and ended up working it into about 25% off. Pretty excited. Wife is super happy since it's the only amps she liked.I'd agree. DIRAC, meters, and decent power make the package.
I don't know if it matters but Onkyo told me specifically not to put the M-80 on top of the P-80. The P-80 always goes on top. Not sure if it's because of the heat the M-80 gives off or of the P-80 needs the airflow. Just wanted to give you a heads up.I don't hear the hum but there is clicking between the songs sometime. I hope they will fix it.
I now had some time to test the p-80 with my new amp (hypex nilai dual mono) and I can recommend that setup completely. I have them running my dali opticons 6 mk2 and I feel like the speakers got a new life. The sound depth and detail is just amazing and the set also look like it was made for each other.
True of any pre-power, if you're going to stack them always put the power amp on top.I don't know if it matters but Onkyo told me specifically not to put the M-80 on top of the P-80. Might matter if the cables are very, very thin.I always thought the idea was to put the power amp as close to the speakers as possible to minimise speaker cable length.
