Onkyo Icon P‑80 + M‑80 World First Unboxing and Preview

I was interested in the Icon A-50 due to the ART feature, it's advertised as 140w @ 8ohm & 180w @ 4ohm everywhere including on Onkyo's website, but I'm put off as in the PDF manual it says the following,

North America and Japan models ■Amplifier Section Rated Output Power (North America models) With 8 ohm loads, both channels driven, from 20 Hz20 kHz; rated 110 watts per channel minimum RMS power, with no more than 0.08% total harmonic distortion from 250 milliwatts to rated output. (FTC) (Japan models) 2 ch x 100 W at 8ohms, 20-20,000Hz, 2ch driven of 0.08% THD (JEITA)

Europe models ■Amplifier Section Rated Output Power 2 ch × 110 W at 4 ohms, 1 kHz, 2 ch driven of 1% THD(IEC) THD+N (Tot

Asia and Oceania models ■Amplifier Section Rated Output Power 2 ch × 110 W at 4 ohms, 1 kHz, 2 ch driven of 1% THD(IEC)

What's the deal here?

edit -

Just catching up, will Dirac still be a feature on the A-50?
"Just" different ways and standards for measuring the maximum power. Website says: The A-50 has an output power of 180w(4Ω, 1kHz, THD 0.7%, 2ch driven) / 140w(8Ω, 1kHz, THD 0.7%, 2ch driven)
The manual, I assume, quotes measurements of power based on relevant standards in the given ,market (FTC, JEITA, IEC). The US FTC figure is across 20-20000 Hz, 0.08% so figures will be less than the website figure.

Well it seems disingenuous to me, what region is the power as rated in their advertising!? with the EU model rated at 110W @ 4ohms, it doesn't even say what it's rating is at 8 ohms which will be much less.

Today, Onkyo's dealer in Taiwan released the world first unboxing and hands-on impressions of the high-end Onkyo Icon series stereo preamp “P‑80” and power amplifier “M‑80” on Mobile01—Taiwan’s largest AV forum. The listening experience was shared using Klipsch Forte IV loudspeakers.

According to earlier reports, the P‑80—equipped with dual SUB OUTs—will be Onkyo’s first model to support Dirac Live ART.

The P‑80 and M‑80 are slated for global release by the end of 2025.

Looks good!

Such a shame it won’t have ART. This was going to be my next purchase. I really don’t want to buy an x3800H just for my 2 Channel setup. I’ll keep waiting for such a device. Maybe there’s a Marantz 2 channel pre in the pipeline which will support ART.

They were like we gonna run this through Klipsch Heritage Series to prove the power of room eq

This Wednesday at my dealer’s. Probably Thursday at my place. I will connect it to a Rotel 1582MK2 and two XTZ Edge 12.17 subs.

I'm more concerned about the difference in DAC quality
The DAC quality will have a minor impact on end audible result (if any), where Dirac will have a major impact....

20% of the effort for 80% of the result...

your speakers, room and room correction/eq will have a much much bigger impact on SQ. beyond that I would consider features, build quality/qc, etc.. Sear the forum for issues with NAD devices and there seems to be a higher frequency of both hardware and firmware issues (e.g., issues with subwoofer outputs and digital inputs, advertised Dirac features that were never implemented) compared to other brands.

One of the 8 from the first badge in The Netherlands. I also received a 20 procent Dirac discount for the Onkyo release. Dlbc will be nice. Let's see if I can make some time this weekend to install things.

Okay, I couldn't resist. It was as if the machine called to me in my dreams: "Install me, install me." Man and their audio hobbies (ladies, excuse me).

Up and running in 15 minutes. When starting the machine, there was a terrible low hum. Fortunately, it turned out not to be a ground loop, but the top plate (the small tin plate in the middle) is vibrating. The screws are all tightened. Maybe I should put a small weight on it. Nothing a good jar of mayo can’t handle for testing.

When turning the machine off, the volume knob turns to zero. The select knob is like a gamepad knob (something like that) it’s not as sturdy as the knobs on most preamps, which you can really grip and turn.

The sound is fine, not different from other equipment I’ve had. There’s a crossover that can be set in the app, with options for full band or 40Hz to 200Hz.

I’m playing Qobuz Connect on my PC and phone over the network, no Bluetooth. All is fine. I think with the pairing amplifier a nice looking setup.

(not testing hdmi or earc, I won´t use that, subs will be installed later).
Edit: Still playing. No heat on top. No egs to fry. Happy for this).

Interesting.

I'd like to buy the A50 integrated amplifier, but I can't find any reviews (just some doubts about its actual power).

In Italy, it's available for €1200, which seems too low to me - :) We're used to crazy prices for HiFi.
If you have any news...
Thank you very much.

It looks good. I like the new Onkyo logo. If I was still working I'd be very tempted to get the pre power combo.

Could you please help confirm whether the two SUB OUTs on the P-80 are independently controllable?

The official product webpage indicates that the two SUB OUTs are independent, but the user manual states that they share the same signal.(which means Y splitters) The information seems confusing.

That’s a good question. I did notice that earlier as well. I haven’t connected the subs yet. In the controller, I can check one or two subwoofers. The volume indicator shows two volume levels for the subs. Does that mean anything?

It will probably become clear after a Dirac measurement, I guess, which I haven’t done yet. No time this weekend.
