On the Distortion of Cirrus Logic CS431xx-Based Devices: A Comparative Review

How would this review influence your purchase decision of a device employing Cirrus Logic CS431xx?

  • Going forward I will not buy a device if it adopts any Cirrus Logic DAC chip.

    Votes: 23 11.7%
  • I would not consider any device with CS431xx.

    Votes: 20 10.2%
  • I'd consider a device with CS431xx only if it's been tested free of the "Cirrus hump" distortion.

    Votes: 102 52.0%
  • I don't care about this distortion issue and would just consider the device's other features.

I have not noticed any difference (In class AB) that's why i am asking.only thing is that i noticed a slight less brilliance in highs compared to an older portable dac with out a switch. Its not detectable at first you have to listen for a few minutes and this are tracks i know very well so i can tell. In unknown tracks its hard to tell.Thats why i asked if applying DRE off at normal levels delivers a cleaner signal yet reduces or alter something, like various filters i use at production. They clean a signal yet they alter something ealse ,not necessary worst or better

Have not noticed any difference with DRE off on my Topping D70 Pro Octo but it's also not a headphone DAC; it has 8 of the Cirrus chips .

The advert for the HiBy W4 mentions a DRE switch.

Ah ok, didn’t see that in the picture.
My W4 (v1.00) has a “NOS” switch, but no DRE option that I could find in the menu. There is a newer FW available from HiBy (v1.10), but I got an error trying to install it. Will try again.

EDIT: Just updated to v1.10 (HiBy did change the FW file for USB upgrade from a '.bin' to a '.ufw' format). Still no DRE switch. This whole section of the product page appears obsolete or reserved for a future version: HiBy Blue iOS says it does not support W4, and although HiBY Blue Android "sees" the W4, it has exactly zero option to configure anything.
I believe W4 is one of these devices where all the configuration settings are made through the on-board menu. This is an interesting approach as compared to, say a a Qudelix 5K which relies heavily on its companion app. OTOH, in its current stage, the W4 is missing several features: DRE on/off switch, a real EQ option (Rock. Pop, Classic, Jazz... presets for now).

I don't think it amounts to false advertising: the DRE setting is only shown in @reallystate zoomed picture, it's not listed as a feature, and Hiby gave no details about the EQ capabilities—I assumed it would be at least a GEQ (the W3-II had a 5-band GEQ). :p

Maybe a small plastic inside or something got unglued so to speak.if it happens with other audio as well might be something,if only with the specific files maybe the frequencies cause resonance.
Interesting, for my HD 560S the ratling starts at volumes ≥77%, and for my new HD 550 it's at ≥88%. However my normal music listening level is 20-30%, so it's not a problem at all for those headphones (whereas for the HD 558 it starts at volumes ≥34%).

Still part of the website main images in audio componentry. Why defend the brand?

There's another picture as well:

Hopefully it will come in a future update? (Or maybe it was present in an older version and they removed it?)

Maybe someone who owns one can complain about it not being there and see what they say?

Thanks for the info ,it would probably interest Hiby owners.

Ask Joe Bloggs from Hiby, he’s on this forum and was recently posting

Just search for his name and message him.

Even if DRE switch were in the works I have no idea how anybody at the ad copy department would have got wind of it let alone drawn it into concept art.

Would be pretty sure DRE here doesn't stand for the DRE switch of the CS chip, even if god knows what it might actually stand for.

Will update if I have one.
