Okto 8 Owner’s Thread

The fuse is here:
okto plug.jpeg

yes right next to the IEC inlet, its accessible from outside the box.
Got it. How tiny. so I should try to replace? I already ordered a new one. But still probably worth trying to fix. How do get the fuse model type?

You should be able to get one at a hardware or electronics store. Just take out the old fuse, observe if it's blown, if it is blown read the value on the fuse. I don't remember exactly but I think it was a 1.5A slow blow.

Just looked at my earlier post in this thread: The fuse is 5x20mm and is a F 400mA L250V

That looks correct. Did you take out the old fuse to see if the wire was broken?

I think it is broken. It is so tiny hard to see even with picture. But look like wire does not go from top to bottom. $7 in Amazon & it will come tomorrow. Nothing to lose.

Definitely let us know, hopefully not to late to cancel your order with Okto if this is a simple fix.

I cannot find any other 8 channel DAC that has AES and that was measured, so ordered another one. I use it with the Vanity -> Trinnov Demon-> Dac8. Hurts buying same tech 6 years later. I normally replace things that are that old. LOL

I am hoping 2 things got fixed since my last purchase. Someone said the channels were not synced perfect? Has this been addressed? What about the bit depth screen for AES?
Hi There
I hope the fuse replacement is enough, don't hesitate to talk to Pavel.

For the AES inputs, they work 44..192khz with 16 or 24 bits and what arrives on the spdif/aes decoder is just sent to the DAC chip without any treatment dithering or so. only the ES9028 DPLL will adjust the value to accommodate remaining jitter vs embedded crystal frequency (45/49mhz).

The only "sync" issue is a potential 1 sample delay between the master channel (AES1) and the 3 others.
this is because the DAC8 use a single receiver chip (ak4118) and the 3 other AES are decoded in software within xmos.
I have addressed that in a new version of the firmware but it is not released yet.
As you are the proud owner of a Vanity board (like me :) ) then this will not be a problem for you : each AES correspond to a channel (L/R/C/LFE...) and then you might have a 1 sample delay difference from Chanel 1 to another meaning 1 or 2 centimetres equivalent. I m sure you never sit in your sofa with a 1 centimetre precision.

All the best with your DAC8

My new, possibly not needed, new dac8 pro came. That was super quick. In 2020 it took almost 3 months.
So did my fuses, but I ordered it to my work location by mistake. I have it now so will try tonight. Maybe even leave work early.

I hooked up the new dac yesterday. Trinnov removed the calibration when I changed the routing back to AES. Interestingly when I changed the routing to analog in the Trinnov when the DAC broke it retained the calibration.

There is a new screen. Just not the one I want with the bit rate. It has 8 squares that fill when signal is streaming.

I have 3 Vanities. The v103 that still works perfect. Retired when I upgraded to 4K/v203. I got 2 of the 203 Vanities. I wanted a backup of both the oppo & the vanity. My original 203 has been in operation for 7+ years. Since DAC8 Pro is the only 6 channel dac with AES that has measurements in 8 years, maybe I should have backup.

I googled if I can use 3 DAC's if DAC8 goes out of biz and it claimed:
A 6-channel (or 8-channel) DAC is superior to using three separate stereo DACs for multichannel audio due to synchronization, phase alignment, & they often suffer from drift and independent clock issues. And I just do not have rack space for 3 DAC's so rather not. Plus 2 more power cables.

I use multiple Theta Digital Gen8s3 dacs with no issues. I think dacs with a clock input would solve the problem. Mine don't have that feature. I am considering adding a Dac8 but wonder with so many differences between the hardware, if I might suffer those issues then. I have also wondered if Dirac Live might help. I have the VanityPro bnc model. I feed my dacs via bnc from the VanityPro and with xlr from my Theta Casablanca V.

Without coordinated clocks DACs will drift, that's why we have multichannel DACs.

Hope you have the unfortunate/fortunate pleasure of the possession of 2 working Oktos @Dacapalooza!

I think if I remember correctly the AES from the Casablanca down converts to 16-bits. So perfect if you got the Dac8 - you won't miss the missing bit depth screen that is in okto's screen shots.

My new DAC is SN 4xx. So Okto sold 400 DAC's in 6 years. How they still in business? Forget that, my bigger question is why no one is buying it from this forum? There is so much talk here about the DAC8 pro. People mentioning wanting to buy 2 even. And there is no other known multichannel DAC that measures well. Except the Oppo 205 but you can't hook that up to room correction. And it clips. We certainly pick on multichannel DAC's a lot here and when we finally find a decent one still no takers? Maybe I by mistake did the right thing ordering another one before even trying to fix.

Sometime I think I am the only one who cares about multichannel. :)

That is unfortunately not very surprising. I hope they are having better luck with their stereo offering. Many years later, I am still very happy with my unit. I don't want to jinx it, but mine "just works".

I hope you can resuscitate your previous unit.

With 2TB of 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 channel music in my local library, I will never lose interest in multichannel. In addition, I regularly spend 4 hours a night watching 5.1 film and TV through my DM7. If I can't bring my DM7 to the afterlife (or if that fails, an Okto) I ain't dying. This is heaven on earth.

Glad it was an easy, if not expensive fix. If I had more expendable income I'd get a second Okto as well, it's an indispensable part of my audio system. I know there are plenty of pro audio interfaces with 8 or more transparent channels but the form factor, knob and remote make this thing unique.
