Okto 8 Owner’s Thread

Same situation: multiple emails, no response.

Kal -- if this is typical, what is the typical delay to an actual response?

In the meantime..... I have a relatively early unit SN 155 and have been fighting for hours to get the 1.5 upgrade to happen. No matter what combination of installing, uninstalling, rebooting, disconnecting, reconnecting I cannot get past the following error even though everything up to this point matches the release note instructions:

"Firmware upgrade tool for DAC8 products.

Searching OKTO Research product on the USB ports ...
[0] > VID 20B1, PID 2009, BCD 0142 : OKTO RESEARCH DAC8PRO 000155

found DAC8PRO v1.42
Upgrading USB firmware, do not disconnect...
Verifying image 239kB
Preparing flash memory (up to 10 seconds...)
Unexpected Error in dfu_getStatus -9 at block 0
Downloading data...
Unexpected Error: dfudownload command returned an error -9 at block 1.
Searching OKTO Research product on the USB ports ...
Cannot open device => uninstall any driver first and install winusb (using Zadig 2.8)

Could not find or access a valid DAC8 product
please try uninstalling any existing drivers."

It's "interesting" that at first it (apparently) finds the DAC8pro device, but then does not find the OKTO RESEARCH DFU device, even though both are shown as installed and running in Device Manager.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried installing the winusb version recommended in the error message, and did you uninstall the DIYINHK ASIO driver beforehand?

What version of Windows on what kind of hardware are you using?

Have you considered downloading and using the Linux Mint USB Stick that OKTO is offering as an alternative installation method?

Finally I got a response 2 days ago. Pavel said he'd been OoO. I guess you have to just wait.

I am having a weird issue with my 2nd dac8pro, so decided to repair or exchange it. It's a bummer that I seem to have to pay the 1-way shipping to Okto according to the warranty information, though it is a faulty unit. I wonder if someone DIY-repaired one.

  1. Yes, I did follow the instructions to the letter.
  2. My hardware and software are both common, up to date and applicable to this process.
  3. Not until Okto suggests that

In my experience, it is unpredictable. Be persistent and try not to be peeved.

Hello!

New user here, but I have recently found out about this great DAC (on paper), and so I have filled the contact form on their official site.
Unfortunately I got no response, and I am wondering if the company is still active or if they still have products available?!
Reading thru the thread I've also noticed that the upgrade process isn't always smooth. Is this just a Windows thing or does it apply also for Mac?
One final question if I may, is it the volume control in 1db steps or 0.5 db steps?

I hope someone can clear some of these doubts up. Many thanks!!

I'm one of the early adopters, and did have some issues, but they were very helpful, and got me the special upgrade kit, which worked fine.
I think upgrade problems were only for the early shipments.
While they've not been lickety split in response time, I've always found they responded well, and in detail - I have ZERO issues with them, or the product.
It's a superb bit of kit; I have no regrets...and now it looks like the atmos tech is finally catching up with it's capabilities (AES and USB inputs, switchable.)

That's an encouraging feedback!! I hope they'll comeback with a reply soon, cause I would love to try it out. Is the stereo version stable via USB? That's how I would like to use mine.

Mine is an 8 channel one. Have had zero issues with PC/Jriver/USB.

I have 8ch version as well. Early firmware updates were a bit of a pain but the most recent was painless - on a Mac even. If you need the features Okto offers it is a great DAC, highly recommended. I use it for 3-way active XO + 2 subs via Roon, Mac, USB but also use the AES input for my ADC so I can use DSP on analog sources.

Yes, same here too!:D
If you would be interested in the details of my present setup, please visit here and here on my project thread.

Mine's been rock solid for years now as well, using it with a Raspberry 4 running ALARM and using CamillaDSP for 2 way XO and room EQ.

Sadly I have decided to move on from the Okto. No replies for nearly a month now. Unfortunately I cannot trust a business that doesn't even do basic customer follow up.
Also, I saw quite a few units on sale saying that the silver face stereo unit is now rare and very hard to come by. Which again rises doubts about the fact that the unit is still in production.
Sad to see a good product review but not a good business model.

Why were you hesitating in first place? Not sure I followed, sorry.

Therry are other excellent 8-channel DAC from Exasound (s88) and Merging (Hapi Mk3) for instance, but not the same price tag.
