OH, NO! AMIR IS UNDER ATTACK!!!

Any indication on why it was gone, or why it's back? I really cannot be bothered to actually take a look myself

I just read a couple more pages of the latest posts over there because I'm putting off doing something more important! Well, it's still a load of junk! I think it's just to draw in and troll Amir. Arguments can't be won over there, at least with a few of the members, other members over there seem to think the OP is nuts.

Must likely because enough folks complained to the admins. Both ways.

That thread is a grotesque clown show, but I'm kind of glad they restored it.

In my view all threads and comments (with few exceptions) should be left standing, so that everyone else can make up their own minds.

I read the first few pages and was hoping @Amir did not respond…until I saw Amir’s responses. Amir’s responses were very logical, scientifically solid and well stated. Certainly better than the OP/Troll deserved.

We all have different preferences and opinions. I’m not a fan of people calling out guys who back up all of their assertions with scientific proof as Amir does routinely. It’s disrespectful and I don’t think it’s worthy of a response. Let these people wallow in their ignorance. ASR has been a breath of fresh air in a hobby that is all too frequently polluted with snake oil and pseudoscience.

I would like to suggest that it is not a good use of your time and effort to post there ...
It is important to see if one can explain what we believe to non-believers. It sharpens one's skills and arguments and even forces unearthing new data points.

Further, on any forum, there is a 20:1 ratio of those who just read vs those who post. Many of those people are interested and will get something out of the argument.

Is there an ASR manifesto somewhere that sets out the basic philosophy? (I'm not finding one ...) That might forestall the need for 100+ replies ...

Sort of;

I'd counter this is not "belief"... measurements are facts proving and providing a working and repeatable model.
"Belief" precedes that until the believer provides a new repeatable, working model.

In my TODO list is an FAQ that would cover all of these common questions. I need to block the time and get it done. :)

It might be counter intuitive but it is a belief, though based on a body of evidence, the humility of the scientific process is to aknowledge that, and always let a little door open for a change of theory.

Their belief is that science & engineering is not good enough to explain what they perceive. Ours is that it is and that they are not performing their listening tests correctly. This is what I meant by that word.

Upon review after reports of member disregard for ASR policy, have issued a ban and cleaned up the thread.

Thanks for helping to support our rules and (even better) reporting violations so can keep threads on topic.

I think the other side will see this in a similar way as disrespectful that somebody comes in, and in a calm, measured, and thoughtful way dismantles what they think is reality.

I'd postulate that all of the nonsense about audio that many still believe was invented by the audio magazines from the 1980s on. Way before internet forums.

With the magazines there was no opportunity for dissent - you could write a letter but few such letters were ever published. So a lot of us took what the magazines said as gospel. We spent time and money going down idiotic rabbit holes.

What we have on some forums is older contributors passing on the baton of nonsense to the next generation. If there's no dissent on the forum then it's not unreasonable for someone to accept what is being said as fact.

If there's at least one person offering an alternative point of view, it may at least make some readers think twice. That won't be the hard-core contributors but, as you say, it may be a significant proportion of onlookers.

The OP in that thread specifically mentioned and criticised @Amir and ASR. That - by my reckoning - is an invitation to step in and set the record straight. If the forum doesn't like this - then tough - they should have deleted the OP from the start.

Sure, no argument there. But the whole thing already started just because ASR exists. So yeah, one could blame Amir for starting the feud ;) If he had just kept his mouth shut...
