OH, NO! AMIR IS UNDER ATTACK!!!

Any idea as to why it got removed? Was Amir too convincing?
If you know anything about AudioGon, they have erased more threads and banned more users than all the books in the libraries of Congress and people who died in WWII.

It's easier to erase a complete thread than to tell people to conduct themselves like humans at AG. I thought that was universally known. 95+ % of the decent members have long since abandoned, died or been banned from that site. I'd say they are hanging on by a thread, but they might remove that, too.

I visit 2-3 sites and post an average of 3-5 posts per week. Life is too short to spend every waking hour fumbling around on a website.

I have chickens to feed, neighbors to holler at, and politicians to complain about to the rabbit, goats, and dog. The chickens quit listening.

Regards

I think this explains a lot:

"A smart person will change their view if new information contradicts their belief. An indoctrinated person lacks this ability. They are conditioned to dismiss facts."

Forgive me if this has been covered elsewhere, but to formalise the second half of this identity there is what is known as the backfire effect. Without having had the displeasure of having the opportunity to read the Audiogon rants, I suspect that may have been at play (I saw another similar thread about a year or so ago).

A copy and paste -

"The backfire effect is a cognitive bias that causes people who encounter evidence that challenges their beliefs to reject that evidence, and to strengthen their support of their original stance. Essentially, the backfire effect means that showing people evidence which proves that they are wrong is often ineffective, and can actually end up backfiring, by causing them to support their original stance more strongly than they previously did."

It looks like we no longer get to 'enjoy' the marvel of spouted nonsense as well in the OP as in the comments by some rude commenters (not Amirm but 3 or 4 outspoken individuals that clearly were lacking any technical knowledge)

This is my shocked face.

I think it's called cognitive dissonance.

Maybe they thought the thread was too low for their standards too, given how some stuff was being conducted. Maybe as a whole the site thought the OP's points & discussion were too absurd for them too.

Sort of, but I think that the backfire effect is different; its focus is summarised in the quote I copied.

There is only one belief on the part of the fundamentalist. There is no conflict.

I initially commented in response to this - An indoctrinated person lacks this ability. They are conditioned to dismiss facts.

edit - or, alternatively (and better, having thought about it for a nanosecond), the mirror image of A smart person will change their view if new information contradicts their belief.

Know that they are commercial and rely on audiophile advertisers.

And nothing too erudite (Amir) for the demographic.

The goal is the construction of a grandiose self-image and social status, where high fidelity music reproduction is not a goal but the conduit to validate your worthiness; this conduit can be manipulated at discretion to achieve your goals regardless any factual true. Any attempt to destabilize this deluded construction will trigger a backlash; after all, accepting facts will prove you are just a fool, not an easy pill to swallow for anyone.

I think the reaction ASR gets is often a result of these types of “enlightened” responses.

I’m certainly not the smartest guy in the room, but have learned that calling people stupid insecure fools isn’t helpful if the intent is to try to inform and educate them..

It was a hard lesson I learned early-mid career. Being right doesn’t mean sh*t if the decision makers aren’t listening to you……

@Groove01
You are correct... But the type of people @Madlop26 describes are unlikely to be receptive to reasonable arguments, because as he says if they accept the facts then they're suckers, and no one wants to be a sucker.

So they keep proselytizing, keep trying to con others into buying $3000 power cords too - misery loves company - and keep viciously denigrating "naysayers" for being hard of hearing and thick in the head and owning used Best Buy systems.

I'm just giving them the benefit of the doubt, and not all the posters in that thread were "dismissive & crazy".

An idea for merch: T-shirt, cap or mug with "proudly deleted @ Audiogon"

Audiophools acting like audiophools can often be embarrassing. Got to shut them up before they hurt sales. ;)

I would like to suggest that it is not a good use of your time and effort to post there ...
Yeah, I agree with that idea.....goes together with what I said in my first post in this thread that who cares if it's on a different site (particularly one of that ilk), but it's a different ball game if the post had appeared here on ASR. This part of the internet can be argued & policed.
