Nvidia Shield: Douk U2 PCM *and* HDMI bitstream audio simultaneously?

I have the following setup:

Nvidia Shield -> HMDI cable -> AV receiver -> HDMI cable -> TV

While perfectly preserving the above setup (retaining all of the audio capability), I would like to add the Douk U2 to the Nvidia Shield to generate an optical output. My objective is to use this as an electrically isolated signal to drive a cheap DAC and a VU meter for eye candy.

My concern was whether connecting a Douk U2 will cause the Nvidia Shield to switch off the HDMI audio signal going to the receiver. Does anyone know if the Nvidia Shield can transmit HDMI bitstream audio signal while simultaneously providing a PCM signal through USB?

Thank you in advance!

It appears that the Shield can output audio on HDMI or USB, but not both at the same time. You can see this as a positive or negative.

For example, you can leave the U2 connected, but when it is off, Shield will output audio through HDMI. When U2 is switched on, Shield will stop outputting audio on HDMI and output audio through USB according to the settings for USB audio in Shield.

But no, cannot output both at the same time.

Simultaneous output to two independently clocked audio devices requires asynchronous resampling for one of the devices and is generally quite complicated. OSX can do that (aggregate device) but synchronization of the two devices is still not perfect.
