NuPrimeX Fusion-3X
This isn’t a double-blind critical review; it’s simply my take after living with the amplifier.
Audiophiles don’t have finish lines; only temporary pit stops. New products keep arriving, each promising the next leap forward, and sometimes the tease is enough to pull you in. With the Hypex NCore NC500 amplifiers, I was already there. For almost 10 years I’ve been running them: the 7-channel ATI AT527NC and the 4-channel Nord Acoustic NC500 amps (200 watts @ 8 ohms, 300 watts @ 4 ohms). In HiFi, Bruno Putzeys’ Hypex NCore NC500 module is genuinely legendary: influential, benchmark-defining, widely adopted, and still respected. That alone says plenty, especially compared with the Motorola DCP-501s with Tripath T-Class amplification I owned back in 1999.
The shift started when I saw Canadian YouTuber Spec of Tech explain why he owned NuPrime, and noted that Bill Duddleston of Legacy Audio had also used NuPrime amplifiers until Legacy developed its own. That sent me looking into Jason Lim, NuPrime’s founder. His background is unusually deep: senior software and tech-infrastructure work in Silicon Valley, CPU design, relational databases, and core web applications for Netscape, Oracle, Sun Microsystems and Motorola. He later co-founded NuForce, which was sold to Optoma, then joined forces with the Taiwan OEM behind NuPrime in 2014. The company won four industry awards right away, and in April 2025 introduced the NuPrime-X line at Axpona for immersive audio in home theater and gaming.
The biggest change in my system came last year, when I acquired the Bowers & Wilkins 803 D4. Everything changed. I had previously owned JBL 4367, KEF R11, Q Acoustics Concept 500 and plenty of lesser speakers, along with several Class AB amplifiers, from my Classe Audio Delta Stereo (still my absolute favorite stereo amp) to Yamaha, Arcam and, of course, Purifi. The 803 D4s reveal amplifier differences more clearly than any speaker I’ve owned. After nine years with my home theater front-three amplification, it was time to try something different.

For context, the Hypex NCore switching frequency is roughly 400,000-500,000 times per second. The Fusion 3X is specified at 700,000-750,000 times per second, considerably higher than the industry norm, while also claiming reduced MosFET temperatures.
I purchased the NuPrime-X Fusion 3X from Sonic Unity in Oregon, and it shipped FedEx Express International directly from the factory in Taiwan to me in Pennsylvania. Auditioning a new amplifier is tricky. You forget the exact edges of the old amp’s sound, start listening hard for vocals, bass, background detail and nuance, and inevitably want the new piece to justify itself. Some bias is built in.
Here’s my purely subjective opinion: almost a month in, I’m smitten. The NuPrime-X Fusion 3X is wildly engaging. At its best, it makes the speaker seem less like a speaker and more like the instrument making the sound. Play a jackhammer, and the Fusion does not merely describe a jackhammer; it gives the impression of one happening in the room. Compared with my other Class D amplifiers, it brings a clarity, immediacy and richness I had not heard from them in quite the same way. My Hypex and Purifi amps are abundantly clear, but the Fusion 3X adds presence, space and a sharper sense of delineation. Maybe that is the transient response. Modern music production often leans on compression and high recording levels, and while the Fusion 3X was not designed to fight the loudness war, it seems to handle that density more adroitly. Whether it sounds better to you than NCore, NCoreX or Purifi is personal. I’m not trying to settle that argument. I’m saying this amp is the real deal. I still love my NCore and Purifi amps, but I keep listening to the NuPrime-X Fusion 3X because it feels different, alive and exciting. In closing, it is lively, wickedly accurate and musically sophisticated in a way that keeps pulling me back. A handful of friends have come over, unaware anything changed, and a few asked, “What’s different? This sounds really good!” That may be the most honest endorsement I can offer.
