Norah Jones – Visions – first single – Running. Will it be a reference like "Come Away With Me"? (Stereo vs Dolby Atmos)

Was it really? I'm glad I missed that short period. The album was a technical disappointment to me.

Breathy, close miked female voices seem to get a lot of audiophiles hot under the collar don't they?

I've picked up plenty of Krall's CDs for a few cents, but never really got into her. She just seems to be playing/singing standards like painting by numbers to me.
I remember reading this years ago:

The original session tracks were analog, and the SACD version that was so famous is apparently just the 16/44.1 master converted to DSD.

As for Diana Krall, background music for when you have people over for dinner, and you don't want the music to distract too much from the conversation. There are a couple of her tracks I've liked over the year, but some of my friends have been big fans, so there's something you and I are missing.

Last week I realized I could indeed play Atmos music in my current system without having to buy an Apple TV or any other additional hardware, it's possible to play Atmos mixes using the Tidal app in my Atmos-compatible LG TV through my Marantz Cinema 50. I don't have a full-fledged Atmos system, just a 5.2 system, but I find it works pretty well. Hence, I decided to end my subscription with Qobuz and switch to Tidal as I find the ability to play Atmos music adds to the overall experience as an addition to the regular 2-channel mixes.

I just did some testing on what will happen if I play an Atmos mix through my regular 2-channel streamer. I had hoped that the Atmos track would just be downmixed to stereo so that I would get the better dynamics of the Atmos mixes, but unfortunately, Tidal will only re-route the stream to the more dynamically compressed regular 2-channel mix when the playback system isn't Atmos compatible.

I'm not sure if Apple Music will also re-route the stream to the regular stereo mix just as Tidal does if you use a non-Atmos compatible playback system, so unless you have compatible gear throughout your system, I don't think you will get the less dynamically compressed version the Atmos mix is offering.

Oh by the way, why are you against changing to Tidal? Most of the MQA stuff is gone now when they are replacing them with regular flac files.
I wonder the same about Apple Music. They definitely like to have that Atmos logo up even when you are playing in stereo. I’m assuming you’ll just get the stereo ALAC. Also isn’t the Atmos stream compressed?

It also shows lossless so which is it?

Also these record producers. I wish they would just release the downmixed Atmos mix or learn how to mix in stereo properly. There is no excuse especially considering the genee of this music. Are they competing on radio anymore? Old habits die hard I guess.

At the least the Atmos people are rethinking things. Perhaps they have to as they have to balance all levels on all those channels and all of them together make it sound louder in actual playback.

I have a number of her LP's and CD's and will occasionally listen to them. We did see her in concert at the Silver Spur Arena in Kissimmee, Florida November 13, 2004. They went to a fair amount of trouble to acoustically treat the arena and it was a great concert. I had to look it up to get the date correct, but she did 105 concerts in 2004.

When it comes to the Norah Jones album, you could just listen to both the Atmos version and the regular version, and if you turn off any volume normalization the Atmos version should be way quieter than the regular version. If it it's not a lot quieter you can be certain that Apple has re-routed the stream to the regular version.

With the streams from Tidal, I have analyzed the sound files so I’m 100% sure they re-route the stream to the regular one if the playback system doesn't have Atmos decoding capabilities as is the case with my regular 2-channel playback system. I guess I would get the higher dynamic Atmos version downmixed to 2-channels if I play it through my Atmos capable Marantz receiver and have it set up to just play it in stereo, but there is of course no point in doing that as I rather use all the speakers in my system for the Atmos music mixes. :)

I’m sure most of the Atmos mixes would have had lesser dynamics in the same way as the regular mixes if Atmos as a format didn't have the rule of -18 LUFS built into the specs. If an Atmos mix is louder than that it will be rejected from being released. So it's not like they don't know how to mix in stereo to preserve the dynamics, they are just not forced to keep the dynamics as they have to with Atmos.
