in which post # is the final winner - and where is the final compiled track list?
Every year about this time, I pilot a process (for 13 years now) to find the best indie-folk and adjacent music
performance tracks. Generally, I avoid "official" music videos. I personally prefer to see a performance of some kind, not some abstract, artistic stuff, which is what most, although not all, official videos contain. (Taylor Swift strikes a good balance with hers, I think.) I start with a script that scours youtube for up to 15 videos on a seed list of 400 performers I follow, giving me a spreadsheet with 6500 videos (this year), and after that I go through the 20 or so publishers of performance videos: KEXP, Mahogany and the like. From that I make a "discovery" list, in alphabetical order by artist, of videos that show promise. 750, this year.
All that grunt work takes me most of November, which incidentally is the worst month here in Canada for doing anything outside the house. Rainy, cold and wet days.
Next comes the really fun part. From the "discovery list", I pick 80 tracks which a panel of 5 friends and family rate individually. The result is a "top 40" best of the year performance videos, which I complete around Christmas time as a playlist in countdown sequence. We get about 2000 views, and around 500 unique visits to my blog from around the world. Which is nice, even though the main purpose is to have playlists I can personally use and enjoy, and sharing is a sideline.
In point of fact, the Gilmour/ Between Two Points video was number 3 on our 2024 list. It could as easily have been number 1; I'm just underlining how great a track that is, not trying to infer there were two better. All 40 or so tracks on the list were decent imo, and my personal favourite generally never makes the top 10.
Below is my post on the final list we had for 2024. I will soon begin a thread here for our 2025 list. And I will submit a track to Armin's thread, but it is so hard to choose because already I have found a large number of fantastic performance videos.
Because of the shameless self-promotion, I would like to point out that this is strictly non-monetized, hobby stuff. It all began in the 1960s when, as an early adolescent, I made my own weekly top 40 charts eliminating what I then thought was crap ... like Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin. Still don't really care for either one, actually, but I digress. I just like to share, and talk about, and watch, and listen, to great music.
Our 12th annual indie folk video playlist is up. All the information right here ... https://gesprek.net/2024/12/26/at-last-bears-den-number-1-on-the-gesprek-indie-folk-playlist-for-2024/
