Nominate Your Favorite Track of 2024 (Contest)

I know this "track" will not win any popularity vote contest ;), but for whoever who happens to enjoy it, it's so worth it.

Chopin's piano sonata no 3 is the musical piece that I listened the most in the past year. To my ears, it really embodies everything we experience in life. I hear hope and despair, joy and sadness, life's present moment and life's finite nature, romanticism and regrets, and the self awareness and acceptance of all of above.

And Avdeeva here is one of the best recent interpreter of this piece.

Interesting microphone arrangement - a "tail shot" plus room microphones. Maybe a bit more ambient sound than is ideal, but still a good, realistic sound.

Is there a single music track that really captured your heart in 2024? For me, this was it: the cover song by David Gilmour's daughter, Romany Gilmour: Between Two Points. I especially like this tour rehearsal video. The bass is distorted but the vocals are well recorded, highlighting the calm and beautiful voice of Romany:

The guitar segment at the end by David is a superb bonus, clearly demonstrating his mastery of the instrument.

Post your favorite song (NOT album). Members will vote with Like button. Whoever gets the highest number of likes, myself excluded, will get a gift from me come January 2nd. I will tally the results on the new year.

EDIT: Please only nominate one track.
Happy New Year,Amir und thanks for All. Wish You good und healty Life to 2025.
Send You my Video Edit(Happy New Year 2025) to share for all Members
Best Regards!

Hey all,

i tried to put all the tracks mentioned in this thread into a Spotify playlist, so people have a "one stop" solution if they wan't to listen to your recommendations:
Audio Science Review Top Tracks 2024

@amirm: I used the ASR logo and colors to create a playlist icon. Please let me know if that's not okay.

To all those who contributed to the contest:
  • Please check the playlist and let me know via PM if I have chosen the wrong version of your track or if there is a more suitable one.
  • I tried to find the identical version of the YouTube links you posted, which should have worked for the most part.
  • If both single and album versions were available, I favoured the latter.
  • If live versions weren't available, I chose the album version.
  • Obviously, I couldn't include YT-only cover songs and the like.
  • I'm going to clone the playlist on Tidal in a couple of days
Have fun and a happy new year 2025!

cheers,
Times

Awesome!

One of the newer songs that got my attention last year: Laufey - Bewitched

PS> All the best for 2025. Enjoy the music.

Wow, that's an impressive piece of work. I was surprised to see almost 200 tracks.
One very minor error - 'Between Two Points' is on the list twice at positions 1 and 31.

Yes, 100%, my heart was slayed in the same way Mr Tambourine Man slayed it forty years ago when I first listened to it...Taylor Swift's I Hate It Here. A woman displaced in time and space, her acute romanticism (like the romantic poets), wisdom, and intelligence, putting her at odds with the rest of humanity, force her into exile, alone, to some platonic realm ("I actually love it there", so there's that). But omg...the aloneness of geniuses who must exist in a higher realm than the rest of us.

If they see their life as self-centered, then I agree. But if they see their life as a greater opportunity to benefit others, then their satisfaction can be unlimited! ;)

The piece is released in an "official" album by Pentatone: https://www.pentatonemusic.com/product/chopin-voyage/

Although probably recorded at the same venue, it sounds quite different (to my subjective ears ;) ) than the Youtube version. It's too bass heavy in Youtube. Maybe I am just imagining it. Still grateful they released the video though.

EDIT: Just found out, though recorded at the same venue, Avdeeva used a different piano for the Pentatone release than for this live performance.

Pianist and (amateur) recording engineer here. WOW, what an amazing performance, instrument, and hall!!!

I highly doubt all of the microphones shown were used in the mix we hear, or were all even active. The 4 mics way up high are DPA 4006 omnis with APE spheres. It's possible two of them might be active to get some ceiling reflections, but unlikely all 4. If you want hall sound, you typically would have omni or subcardioid mics up very high, set very wide, maybe as wide as the stage, and aimed up and out into the hall.

The large array above the stage with 7 mics gives you options for recording anything up to a full orchestra in surround, and some of those mics are definitely used here, particularly the front 3.
As for the "tail shot" with the pair of Schoeps MK 2 omnis, that is a common way to spot-mic a piano for close detail reinforcement, and you often see it on a concerto situation with full orchestra.

Interestingly, if they moved that pair of mics much farther to the right, they could have done the whole recording with just that one pair of mics if they so chose. This is how Decca has recorded classical piano for many years.

Here are some excellent listening comparisons related to that setup:
