Have you tried Ardour? I just installed it today and it seems to be working for me.

It isn't free, but seems to be well supported.

I've just stumbled into this thread as I'm dipping my toes into making some music (just bought a Roland sh-4d). Have you any experience with lmms (https://lmms.io/) ? At some point I'll probably want to connect a guitar to my pc (via a Zoom g1x four pedal) so I'll need an audio interface, and as I'm using Linux I understand a USB Audio Class Compliant one will be handy. Is there a go-to one that won't break the bank (my requirements seem pretty meagre)? Is the Behringer U-PHORIA UMC202HD going to be ok?

I don't use an audio interface with my setup. I record to a Tascam 24 track digital recorder and then feed that into my Linux PC with usb.

It's probably better to ask at linuxmusicians.com as more people there will have used interfaces rather than just DACs, and for recording rather than mostly listening. UAC2 Class Compliant is a good start, but may just mean they tested it with Mac or iOS, so sometimes they still need quirks handling. Having said that, most low channel count interfaces are pretty simple. Most of the problems come with things that are switched by the driver not a physical switch, or with the mixer matrix that isn't usually present in low channel count interfaces. I think the Focusrite Scarlett Gen1-4 now have pretty solid support, along with a GUI for the more complicated bits, mostly for the higher channel count interfaces. The Forte gained support in the 7.0 kernel release but I don't think it's in the GUI yet, and I haven't tested things like phantom power switching.
