Hi All

I will be building a home theatre/ stereo hybrid system in my apartment - square room 3.4m x 3.4m.

As this will be my first setup, am looking to buy something can sounds good and last me a long time. Auditioned some speakers and love the sound/clarity of Monitor Platinum 200 3g but it is out of my price range.

So i am considering the following to be paired with their accompanying center
- KEF R11 Metas + Q6/R6
- MOFI Sourcepoint 888 / V10 + single 8 / 10 bookshelf
- Arendal 1528 Monitor 8 / Tower 8
- SVS Titan / Pinnacle

Will likely pair them with dual SVS SB 3000 Revolutions

Will appreciate your expert advise thanks!

That is a small room.
IMO it’s a lot harder to do a combined 2-channel and/5.1 setup. And it’s a lot harder in a smaller room.

Something like a Lyngdorf TDAI 2210 has an HDMI-ARC (2.1) as well as a streamer.
And it has Room perfect, which is worth something IMO.
But even their TDAI 3400 does NOT have a sub channel.
Or for electronics maybe Parasound or something like that?

If the room is not wide then a 2.1 or 4.1 can work pretty well compared to a 3.1 or 5.1 system.
The center channel is more important as the seats get really set off to the side.

There are a hundred ways to go though… Some room correction could be worthwhile.

You could get some second hand speakers and a good streamer/amp… and maybe a sub.
I would take your time and try to have a solid plan.

Thanks, what if i prioritize a dual channel stereo setup instead? Would any of the towers be feasible?

It does. The analoge out can be configured to any cut off frequenzy you wish, acting like a real subwoofer out.

I have a different Lyngdorf product, but the gear works and looks pretty nice. And in a modern system then pretty much everything is there is one doesn’t have a TT (and maybe they have something for that too?).

Probably - but speakers and the room are two places where things are important.
I do not know a lot about those speakers, but I am assuming you might be outside of CONUS if you are looking at Monitor Audio.

And that room is about 10’ x 10’, so it is probably more important to have something that fits in the room.
Hence I’d probably focus on electronics, or something like powered speakers like Kii, Genelec, Dutch-n-Dutch. But all those are also expensive.

Someone should have something smaller that would work pretty good and also be something that they have outgrown and you can get some better value out of.

It is pretty complex doing a combined system, and as the room gets smaller it is harder, and to have it be nice looking and not a tangle of cables is also a potential thing to consider.

I’d start by deciding if you want passive speakers or powered.
(I have passive, but if I was starting from scratch I’d likely look at powered.)
Then if you want a TT it can get complicated. Without a TT, then some integrated amp (passive), or some control console without amps makes sense.

Maybe consider using an AVPs (which is an AVR without amps), and use some cheap amps and some used passive speakers?
Or an AVR, if it does all the streaming?

Do you have a CD player or TT? Or what is/are the sources that provide the music for the 2-channel side?

yes im residing outside the US, music source will be from streaming services. Can i ask why you will consider active instead if starting fresh, passive speakers should last longer? thanks!

Your situation is similar to mine excet in that my system has evolved rather than been specified in one go.

My room is almost the same size (3.5x4 instead of 3.5x3.5) - but made worse on account of having effectively glass walls on each side (heavy curtins on the left - nothing on the right)

I use a Denon 3800 avr for amplifiaction, both for music and AV. Importantly EQ'd using @OCA's Evo 1.

Main speakers are (close to) vintage Castle Avon - and cost my around £60. I also have a single BkElec sub.

For surround I have a mix of speakers in 5.1.4 configuration.

Sound wise (and somewhat subjective) it sounds to me better than any system I have ever owned, whether listening to music or movies. I put this mainly down to the Castle Avons, and the EQ.

Well you have no amps, as they are inside of the speakers.
And wiring is easier.
And most have some DSP to help with things.

If one is already streaming, then they do not usually have a distaste for digital like people with TT rigs.
So the idea of a powered speaker and class-D amps is usually something that is easier to abide for people starting out.

And most people get tried or upgrade long before the speakers are “broken”.

Probably not a popular idea around here, but in a room that size I'd consider a high-quality soundbar with subwoofer. Something like the Samsung Q-Series or Sonos Arc Ultra.

I would consider monitors or standmount speakers for that size of room, especially if you already consider using subs.

Also important to understand is that in that size of room you won't hear sub in the middle of the room, the lows in general are going to get a lot of boost from the walls, but direct reflections from the side walls can create a serious droop in the lows depending on where everything is located. It can be a challenge, and you might not be able to get the best out of expensive speakers.

And wiring is easier.
This I would dispute. With actives you need to run the signal cable AND a mains cable - unless you have electrical socket in each position you will put a speaker.

Rather than just a speaker cable.

If you have subs you do not need towers Kef R3 metas would be a great choice.
Your room is too small for your sub choice. It will not be bad just too expensive.

thanks for the response guys, what about high end bookshelves, any recommendations? Would rather steer clear of soundbars for now...

Unless they're wireless. Something like Buchardt A200s are also deaigned to work close to a wall.

Kef r3 metas are great or kef reference 1 if you have a spacious budget

Just about to mention these.

Genuine Cardioid speaker; perfect size for your room, a pair of Buchardt subs too and you’ll have a near perfect full range hifi of enviable powers, as it also includes room correction.

Frankly, anything much larger in your room is going to struggle. And definitely so without some quality room correction.

If you must have home theatre then 5 of the 200s and an Anthem processor plus a pair of subs makes a lot of sense.

ARC room correction is very good.

Or the same but with a Dirac enabled receiver.

I certainly would not go for anything without room correction.
