New "Science": FLAC vs. WAV

What's the difference, unzipped?

Sorry, if you can't hear it, you don't have the right ears, or the right equipment, or the right recordings. For we who do, differences like this are obvious! And someday someone will finally do the right blind test that shows it, I'm sure. After all now we have a JAES peer reviewed meta-analysis to back us up.

OK, you are putting us on. We know your utterly irrational upset at the Reiss paper on hi rez vs. RBCD, which explains your sour grapes mindset on that topic. But, that proves absolutely nothing, as in zero, with regard to FLAC vs. WAV. So, what references do you have on the actual current topic we are discussing here in this thread?

Clearly you are nothing but a provocative troll who has nothing of substance to say

Me, irrationally bound to a mindset? Kind of rich, coming from someone of the 'well, I hear it, I think everyone has to make their own judgement' camp.

And if you think 'FLAC vs WAV' is a subject to be treated seriously, rather than satirically, you're missing the point.

Not obvious to me...

Create WAV file, encode into FLAC level 8, decode to WAV.

File compare:

X:\Temp>fc /b noise.wav noise2.wav
Comparing files noise.wav and NOISE2.WAV
FC: no differences encountered

OK, so what evidence do YOU have to offer to this serious debate?

Um...is that a trick question?

What you shaded up there....read it again.

ex: Sweet Jane, Trinity Sessions, Cowboy Junkies. Margo's leading sss'z ...
Have that, have never noticed an issue playing this disk ...

Look, there are plenty of us who can hear these things and are reporting on it -- on head-fi, on computeraudiophile, in TAS columns, in Barry Diament's and Cookie Marengo's studios -- so regardless of what file comparison says, regardless of negative blind test results (probably invalid anyway due to Type II error!), there's something there.

We gotta stop dismissing it as nonsense, until we figure out what's going on!

What is "full stability?"
All systems I have had never sound their best from switch on - drivers need to reach an equilibrium with regard to their suspension suppleness, electrolytic capacitors get to a normal working temperature, etc; there is always a cycle of tonality changes lasting for a certain number of playings and/or time - until that changing stabilises, I don't take the sound of a system seriously.

As an example, my current setup sounds quite pleasant immediately on switch on, but lacks detail; as playing continues it becomes more detailed but an unpleasant edge intrudes, "difficult" recordings are not nice to listen to; finally, that edge fades away and a decently competent SQ, with plenty of detail, is the stable end point, for the rest of the day.

We can no longer sit back and allow 'objectivist' infiltration, 'objectivist' indoctrination, 'objectivist' subversion and the international 'objectivist' conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids. Unless it's a meta-analysis.

Ok, so help us figure it out with something of substance, other than uncontrolled listener anecdotes. In this forum, they count for little, even by the thousands. That includes my own. And, "plenty of us" does not cut it here. Plenty of folks think MP3, vinyl, tubes, Entreq, Bose, fancy cables, cable lifters, wall electrical outlet plates, etc. are the cat's meow. If you notice, my own perceptual opinions are provided, always with clear caveats by the way, only in cases where perceptual rather than measurable phenomena are being discussed. I can understand how that significant distinction might have gone unnoticed.

So, if you want to stand on your head to defend the Zelig/Clausen study, go ahead. But, since apparently so many people believe and since these formats have been around for so long with easy conversion from one to the other, surely there must be better evidence than "plenty of us who can hear these things". What have you got?

General "Buck" Turgidson: We-he-ell, uh, I'd like to hold off judgement on a thing like that, sir, until all the facts are in.
President Merkin Muffley: General Turgidson! When you instituted the human reliability tests, you *assured* me there was *no* possibility of such a thing *ever* occurring!

If you rub it in circles, does a Genie pop out of your belly button?
Or do you just pass gas?
Remember, To delusional subjectivists "everything matters"! :p
When i rub it something else entirely diffrent happens...

Nothing really matters... :p
