New "Science": FLAC vs. WAV

Because his reference DAC uses Ravenna. So the audio is actually completely regenerated in the interface 100% isolated from the computer.
Nope. Here is the discussion thread on the last report from this author and Bruce/Gary's response: http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showt...ed-music-reprodu&p=82632&viewfull=1#post82632

Same exact response I had upon seeing "organic milk" at the grocery store.

The point here then is, how do you know that "it's broken" - before you buy it?

By the measurements, of course.

I guess you will be spending a lot of money on a DAC then. Because most have crap USB implementations. Very few are as good as Amir's recommended interface. And that's 2011 technology now.

I've just acquired a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24. It uses Firewire. Close enough for rock'n'roll, which is what I want it for.

I'm on ebay now ordering replacement copy's for thousands of CD's that I ripped to flac. Now that I KNOW, how will I ever be satisfied listening to those files again. :(

:p:p:p:p:p:p:p

Sal1950, see it sad when a music lover like you doesn't listen to how things really work. Ordering on Ebay or Amazon has issues as well. Unlike a physical purchase at a physical store ordering over jitter prone, time misaligned TCIP connections permanently becomes embedded in the bits on the disc. Then talk about the effects of the computer working extra with an HTTPS connection and your discs are digitally soiled before you can rip them. PLUS, the activity from HTTPS also soils them after you rip them. The degradation is significant.

I'm going with whatever MingKhan has to say about this. King Khan, where are you?
yes hello friend i sure not can help sound of music listen but read hard information different file sound I think can sound will come different but not listen me only read me want understand why big cook hat mad at boy and girl music happy no mad big cook hat not nice may be needs vegetables not eat meet eat much means mad more salad happy I wish big cook hat be nice eat salad make nice music happy my country small happy good salad toss only hope music save ears

Well there's consistency with some, and none with others. Reality should be reality no matter where your financial interest lie. It's starting to be very apparent on forums who has money invested where, and their reality seems to follow this reality rather than the truth.
big dog big cook mad on you no mad big cook hat be happy you have tall girlfriend you short so much how happen man little big girl

Saying organic vegetables, etc, has always been shorthand for saying organically produced, no manufactured chemicals were intentionally used to improve production - ever since the concept first started ...

Salad days...

The worlds top DAC chip engineers also agree Wav is better than FLAC as well. So these guys must be onto something. Sounds better to me ears as well. I suppose the key is know how things actually work. Either that or have the ability to hear.

Please enlighten us. How do these things really work?

Tim

I hope anyone who posts here would be kind enough to post objective evidence regarding the claimed sound quality differences between FLAC and WAV. If such differences exist, I'm sure there are people who would appreciate the help in fixing what is broken.

Funny...the "organic" food industry and the audio(phile) industry sure do have a lot in common!

Great info here on what happens with a general purpose computer CPU with FLAC, and what Dustin Forman the Sabre chip engineer did to overcome the drawback with the Mirus SD card transport:

"Is there any sound quality loss in playing FLAC from an SD card, rather than WAV?

No there is no sound quality loss. The FLAC is decoded into RAM where it becomes normal lossless PCM data, it then is sent to a FIFO for buffering between the RAM and the DAC. Then it is transmitted to the DAC via I2S interface. All this is done for the lowest jitter. The FLAC file is decoded in chucks in a streaming fashion. This is VERY difference from a regular CPU, where the bursty processing can have audible effects. The FLAC decoder is actually a hybrid hardware decoder and software. We did this so the CPU loading is actually very constant (smooth) during the stream decoding. This is only possible since we did not use a general purpose CPU, but rather made a custom decoder in the FPGA to accomplish this. I think the results speak for themselves. I have not heard of one person claiming they can tell the difference on the INVICTA (MIRUS), where its fairly well accepted that on a computer that is decoding on the fly, audible differences can be perceived."

Sorry, but for those of us who don't have the same friends he has, "fairly well-accepted" does not constitute "Great info here."This is the same rationale that has been presented for every purpose-hobbled, or purpose-built audio computer. I've never seen any solid evidence backing it up. Have you? That would be useful here.

If you can't hear the differences, it is because your system is not resolving enough. It is a well known fact that people who possess high resolving systems routinely hear differences no instruments can detect.
