Regardless, THD is a soft predictor of audible distortion. This is one of the main reasons I listen.

On this particular topic we don't have good objective measurements that predict audible distortion. That's sort of the whole issue.

my point is that you looked at graphs and you expected distortion, thus it's highly likely you would hear distortion. the same way people who expect planars to have fast bass magically have the fastest bass when they listen to it

It's all biased subjective listening, if you did a blind test with the same products and found it out then yeah sure, your subjective thoughts would've had some weight. But you really think your opinion matters more than a head-fi bloke's one if you have looked at the graphs beforehand? both are biased listeners just trying to confirm their biases. Nothing special, i can tell my mum that my speakers distort with this and she'd likely agree. She should start reviewing products or sumn then lol

if it varies from person to person there's no easy predictor. One bloke could identify at -10 db the other could do it at -50. Sure there could be some average but that average thing has been talked about for ages, distortion isn't too big a deal for the most part for most people. Just cus some blokes listen at 114 db and can identify 0.1% distortion doesn't change the general truth.

these new studies are just going to repeat the fact that for the most part distortion isn't an issue. Ofc small bookshelf speakers will suffer, everyone knows that. But we're talking about less than 3-10% at times in the whole song, and if it's specifically in the bass when playing out songs? yeah lol i aint trusting any biased listening

So back to thinking if I don't look at a graph, I am telling the truth about the distortion? Maybe it is a horn speaker and i think they always sound distorted? Or a metal dome tweeter? Or maybe it has a massive but poorly designed woofer, and you thinking because it is large it must be playing clean?

What if you have read reviews that say speaker gets crazy loud without distortion. That doesn't bias you to think that is the case?

What if it is say, a random Chinese speaker. Aren't you predisposed to think it must not sound good?

All of these influences are perfectly OK but reading a distortion graph is not?

I don't need the graphs at all for distortion audibility in bass. I have said a number of times that my assessment of distortion in bass is by ear. It is for tonality where I consider the measurements critical in assessing audibility through listening.

I always start my testing with select few female tracks as they quickly tell me if the speaker is too bright, lispy, etc. The first couple of tracks sounded fine but then I played the third standard track, the Eva Cassidy Ain't no Sunshine. Right at the marker something bad happened:

She takes a breath and starts singing. On Elac Uni-Fi I heard a rather loud squeak instead of that breath! I can't it to words but the artifact actually sounded louder than her voice which came on an instant after that.

I went back to measurements and saw this:

And much of the problem disappeared.

A speaker that plays at 114 dBSPL with 0.1% is beyond state of the art. It doesn't exist in any consumer speaker you can buy.

Once more, distortion in bass and many headphones is hugely above 0.1%. Here is Revel F328Be tower speaker at just 96 dBSPL:

Bass distortion peaks to 3%. Not 0.1%. And not at 114 dBSPL.

Here is another tower speaker, KEF F11:

Distortion is 2% at 50 Hz and shoots way up below that.

You play either speaker at 114 dBSPL, they will massively distort before likely blowing up the drivers. You think you need a blind test to detect that? If so, you are very ill informed.

Really, it is this type of shooting from the hip that resulted in audio objectivity loosing the battle to the other side before ASR. Folks like, with you personal experience, no knowledge of measurements, no controlled testing, no reading of literature, walked the halls and told people nothing is audible. You ruined the message for the rest of us seeing how you could be proven wrong so easily.

I have pleaded with you to watch just one video but you won't. Instead, keep adding noise here lecturing me in what I know, and not knowing a fraction of what you need to know.

The video is a technical presentation, full of coverage of research in controlled testing and data from the same. It will teach you how proper listening tests are performed. You know, the stuff you are bringing up which you don't understand.

Take a 'headphone' like the Koss KSC35/75/PortaPro/KPh30i and turn up the bass a bit.
It will sound distorted at every level above 'all day listening level'.
I own(ed) all of these and know them quite well.
Do the same with any half decent ortho, IEM and you can blast at deafening levels before distortion sets in.
When tests would be done with this (or other similar measuring) headphones in such test I'm sure the detection threshold will be found lower than they state it is now.

This is why one needs to test at various levels, even insane levels to check its performance.

With single continuous test tones it will be easier to hear distortion (because of the added harmonics that aren't masked) but using music it is a lot harder to do.
 
Unless you have world-class, flat response down to 20 Hz, you are either going to hear the low frequencies faintly or with severe distortion. Distortion that sets in at levels that are easily tolerable.
My suspended ceiling distorts with this one :) the subs are ok with it:)
 
Not remotely so. Bookshelf speakers heavily distort with music content in 20 to 30 Hz even at modest playback levels.
You are quite good at picking up lines that suit your agenda... Please try to read and comprehend whole messages

Yes, sighted subjective testing can be biased. OK, so you are reading blind subjective tests only? Where, please? In which magazine, which blog or portal?
In my youth (looong time ago!) I enjoyed reading blind listening tests (in group tests) in Hi-Fi Choice magazine. But several decades ago they abandoned blind listening test, so I didn't renew my subscription afterward. I didn't check lately, but I think there are no blind listening tests in Hi-Fi Choice magazine... or any other magazine... or portal... or blog... or anything. So, where are you finding blind listening test of audio equipment, published on a regular base - say, at least once in a month? I am very curious...
I don't read subjective audio equipment reviews if they are not accompanied with measurements. If there are measurements also (like in Stereophile magazine), I read accompanied subjective review with a grain/boulder of salt. Reviews from ASR and Erin's are what I read on regular basis - state of the art measurements and good sighted listening tests. It would be great to find blind listening tests accompanied with such measurement expertise, but I am not aware of any, so I am eager to learn where you find that dream combination?

yeah, and not every headphone is the koss ksc75 and not every speaker is a tiny bookshelf. I was just saying that for the most part it's not an issue and you seem to agree when you said that any half decent iem or sumn can be blasted at ear deafening levels.

there isn't any and there is no NEED for it, just do a distortion test to find your own distortion identification threshold and then just base your purchase around that perhaps, that's it.

There must be a point to things, what is the point of looking for someone's subjective listening impressions if they don't align with your own personal thresholds and stuff? What if they're completely biased? Why should I care if there's some bloke out there doing blind testing on this if I have products I'm happy with whose distortion I could not find during test sweeps even at loudness levels where I'm uncomfortable? There's no point for me.

One can hear distortion in various situations like running sweeps that excite higher order harmonics in speakers themselves and speakers sitting on resonant surfaces. I'm quite certain that @amirm have heard such things when doing his tests in some speakers. I've certainly experienced that as well, which then has been confirmed by measurements. Point is that if it is audible with test signals, one cannot be sure that it is never audible with music (that has strong masking effect) since music signals are so variable.

But it falsifies that distortion is not an audible issue. Also the amount of headphones used also is not representative for all headphones around.
In any case while non-linear distortion usually is not an issue with music at low to 'normal' listening levels (depends on the recording, SPL, headphone and listener) it makes perfect sense to measure distortion at 94, 104 and 114dB. The latter only for frequencies up to 300Hz or so.

The biggest (very audible) issue is linear distortion (frequency response).
Once that is corrected (and an important question is corrected for whom and how) the non-linear distortion is not a big contributor to perceived sound quality unless driven louder than 'normal' to 'extremely loud' with the lower distortion headphones.

And im not at all saying distortion measurements shouldn't be done at those levels, i think amir is doing a great job on iems and headphones by testing at those levels, really nice to see all that. Just saying that listening at those volumes is not something a normal/the average person does.

I don't know... the few times I was around some young folks with closed headphones on that I could clearly hear would be evidence at least a number of them do.
Arguably these kids could not care less about distortion and sound quality. They want loud sound and a lot of bass.

I agree that unless one listens at loud levels non-linear distortion is not a contributing factor that defines 'sound quality' but rather mostly linear distortion does.
The biggest problem is when measurements show a lot of distortion at 104dB and dismisses that headphone while the same folks never listen loud to protect their hearing.

They are probably the same folks that believe 112 SINAD is preferred over 95 SINAD and will not buy the 95 SINAD device even though it is inaudible.
It's just how people are wired.
