New mysterious Genelec monitors

I just listened to 8381A at audio show, but the room was not good and there was something weird in the calibration even if it looked flat in the GLM measurements. Anyway I didn't like what I heard, I like my 8351A+W371A way better, quite a relief but impossible to judge this way. They are massive, but look better in reality than in photos, for some reason. I heard many worse and plain horrible setups there, but also one surprisingly awesome, so it wasn't impossible to achieve high level in this space

What exactly didn't you like about the sound?

they lacked low end because of the calibration, the guy who calibrated them didn't add any low shelf after the flattening the response, so no wonder they were missing something. They were also dark, even if the calibration was showing basically a flat line, the reason was probably their height and rather low sofa, they were aimed above the heads. Overall there was nothing special about them, I thought I would hear a lot of headroom, but when someone played Gojira rather loud yet not concert level and it was just harsh mess I left. I'm not saying they're bad or anything about their sound, but the calibration and room size just made them unpleasant to listen to. 12kW in 16m2 is just too much. I didn't expect too much as I had previous experience with the same sales guy who was showing genelecs. I met him when I got to their showroom to listen W371A, after 5 minutes of confusing sound I just took over his laptop, measured and calibrated them by myself and it was instantly so much better I just bought them right there. Maybe he has a bad touch for GLM lol. BTW 8361 with W371A in the other room were good, go figure

@holdingpants01 what set did surprise you?

Your own Genelec set is already state of the art. The 8381 will probably only top this on SPL.

Thanks for sharing this. It's better than nothing.
These events have SPL rules and inadequate background noise, on top of small rooms like this one here. Better than nothing.

You have to use them in an appropriate space.
I would like to hear them 'plunked in the middle' of a treated room 90 x 130 x 25 feet.

In a bad room room correction only gets things compensated well at a single listening position, elsewhere in the room it can be even worse than nothing, another reason why a good room and the speaker position in it is an important first requisite for multiple listeners to get an even response IME.

I don't see the provided by Genelec wedges that can be used in such conditions as low sofas.
Poor choice of room on top of this.
That's a pity,dealer should know better.
there were small wedges but really almost none, in the other room they had 8361A with W371A and those were angled down properly. Unfortunately there really had no choice in terms of space, it was a hotel and every room was similar

Anyone in Munich and can share the impressions?

Too bad these cost so much. When I was younger I thought “when I grow up I will have a high end set with all the bells and whistles”, but now I’m past 50 and I still can’t afford the “high end”.

I wouldn’t say these are ‘high end’ which I associate with highly expensive but poor performance the Gens are genuinely fine measuring speakers with good SPL capability.
I have asked about the possibility of getting a pair here but I doubt it will happen, is there even a pair in the UK?

@Purité Audio true, genelec is the real deal, no hifi voodoo commonly found in high end. Today I saw a video of an Audiovector flagship speaker, which had two tweeters on top of each other. Ridiculous. And those cost more than this 8381.

Proper speaker and under half the price of inferior high end alternatives I think.
Which inferior speakers for 73,000 euros each are you thinking of?
