Hi ASR

New member. Long time follower.

I’m searching for a new monitoring solution. I produce / mix my own House and Techno. Wanting to learn some mastering in the future

I’m currently using Yamaha HS8 and Adam Sub with sonarworks. Which have served me well, but I find them harsh at higher volumes and feel I’m ready to up my game

My room is a converted garage loft around 2.5m W x 10m L (sloping either end) x 3m H

I have around 25 panels. Some large homemade 10” corner traps and a load of GIK 242 & 244. It’s as good as I can do myself.

I feel I need something with correction.

Thinking I could stretch to

KH150 with Two KH750.
KH310 with One KH750
Genelec 8331 / 7360
Adam A8 with Two Sub10
Adam S2 with Two Sub10

Am I on the right lines. Or is this overkill for room size.

Thank you

How loud do you listen, and what's the listening distance? Maybe you need monitors which can play significantly louder than an 8" 2-way speaker. Neumann KH420 and Genelec S360 come to mind. The latter might need a sub.

I listen around 75-85 db. Might push a bit more for short periods.

1.5m listening distance.

I fear both of those monitors are too large and well over budget. Even though I’d happily take either given the chance

KH150 with Two KH750 would be my choice.

Thanks for the response. I’ve replied above. Sorry. New to forums

For the music you are working with and based on your experience with the other equipment I too would recommend the KH150 (and subs if needed). They are great for electronic music, should do pretty good at 1.5m distance and are rather non fatiguing (as far as a detailed monitor can be).

Thanks for your thoughts. It reinforces my direction. I wish it was easier to listen to them all.

With what target? How they sound "harsh" exactly? Do you even have measurement microphone and how is the space (room size and does it ring)? For what you want to do concentrate on mid 30's Hz SPL performance/THD, 8" monitors will pass far field (4 m) calibration point (85/88 dB mono/stereo white noise) when crossed with sub/sub's, so it's not them.

Edit: sow the room measurements. On the good side it's long so you can have good back to front refractions and room fundamental won't be much of a problem as it will be low. On the bad side you can't do more than 1.5 m listening distance even if you wish as it's only 2.5 m wide.

Edit: on the bright side KH750 are exactly what doctor ordered (mid 30 Hz output and even time domain) and will work with KH monitors including correction they have. So enjoy your new setup (when you do it all together with corrections). I propose you go 2.2 high crossover 120 Hz Q 0.71 to natural decay slope order and equal loudness compensation (psy in ISO 226 form but even only self low filler at 105 Hz Q 0.71 will work good down to 67 dB programme) so you can lower the SPL programme even when doing work to avoid rather high SPL programme level's (80+) even when doing critical listening.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I would find the Yamahas getting uncomfortable after a few hours. I felt I needed to turn them up to hear too end details. I normally work 75-80 db, may push a little sometimes. So I don’t think it was excessive volume that was the problem. I can’t knock them for what they are, it’s just a trait I’d like to change on the new monitors.

I’ve only used sonarworks and not measured the room any other way I’m afraid. Although I have found this site insightful and am keen to learn more.

I’ve gone 2.1 just to try at first. But after spending some time listening the last few days I’ve ordered a second kh750 and I’m going 2.2 This is Neumann recommendation also. I just wanted to try one before.

The step up in quality is a real eye opener! Just sat enjoying them while they run in. I’m hearing music like never before. I don’t feel the need to push volume at all, I can just hear everything.

For what you are saying it sounds they where bright and with so much isolation and 3m high it's even hard for me to imagine that (even if you used NS10 non M one's). It's normal to start at mid 70's and push up two ~ three times 1.5 dB in time and after that make pause and restart. That's fine regarding hearing loss protection but what might make difference is room modes being active present on mid 70's and raging on 80+.
For the integration purposes it's fine you got all together with monitor's even sub's are what really makes the real difference.
Play with REW (everything from filters to room simulation and measurements) a lot and rearrange a bit all you already have and you do have plenty.
