Welcome to the new sheriff in town @Jimbob54.

Congratulations! Rumor says that the paycheck is huge, and the benefits are amazing!

Much of what the moderators do is behind the scenes, cleaning up spam posts, stopping arguments, deleting inappropriate posts and generally keeping the peace.

It's extremely rare to have interactions in my experience, other than a quick 'Hi' or 'Merry Christmas' message once a year. I wonder if it's a totally thankless job, one that might get in the way of their enjoyment of the site and audio. I wonder how many times necessary moderation interactions have ruined their days.

So I'd like to say thanks for what you do @Jimbob54 in advance. Thanks to all the moderators.

I can't speak for the ASR mods but after spending a 7 year stint as the Admin & Lead Mod of a Linux OS site I can say that I can't remember having any "ruined days" over things but it can be thankless and you need a thick skin. LOL The biggest issues were the occasional loss of someone you looked at as a friend over having to moderate something he was involved in and it wasn't taken well. I get very much of the same thing from being the Inspector for Construction Permits here in the Condo Association where I live. Everyone wants rules, at lease until they have to abide by one they disagree with. LOL When I deny a request to lay down paving stones to build a private patio on property that is Association common ground, the crap will sometimes hit the fan, stuff like that. I couldn't begin to count the times I've been called as-hole. LOL

Hi @Jimbob54 , good luck and thank you for your service. I hope the members continue to behave like Elvis, who, as we all know, was a model citizen.

They probably actually agree with it, as long as it is applied exclusively in the third person. :)

Congrats and thanks for volunteering!!

Of course he's just doing it for the huge paycheck. /s

Amazing that the forum is over 50k users.

I think I'd rather get blood drawn than moderate.

No it’s not totally thankless job. We have a great community here and working with so many professionals makes the job easier and some days fun.

Yes. Wearing the Badge of a Moderator can make you the target for extra spicy comments and our posts are picked apart more than they were before I took the job. So it has in my particular case detracted from the enjoyment of the site.

Countless days and nights have been quite stressful. Having negative interactions with members is never fun or easy. I sometimes wonder if I made the right call or did I overreact and let my emotions get the best of me. I have several times and I have done what I could to rectify that. But yeah. Their are definitely days that get ruined.

It’s not all bad. I especially enjoy helping members find something or fix a thread or post problem. Helping sift out the Trolls and Bad actors that try to ruin a thread. I’m retired and the job helps me stay engaged in something productive and keeps me mentally stimulated. In this House you had better have your wits about you or you will be eaten whole. It’s definitely a challenge. Helping Amir do what he does is my primary motivation. I can’t send him stacks of cash so I give him my time and energy.

Good questions John. ;)
