Hello, my name is Kevin. I apologize for joining this site purely to get advice an a specific subject.

I live in Taipei, and have been performing music in clubs for many years. But I am planning to change my musical focus from performing in clubs to busking. Mostly because I no longer want to lug my electric piano around anymore (I’m 64 years old).

I’m thinking my path forward is to:
- Record myself on the piano, using 1/4” connections. Hopefully eventually have 80-100 songs that I can access and play through a busking amp.
- The reason for me wanting to record myself on the piano for my backing tracks (instead of using canned backing tracks from the internet) is because I have developed unusual arrangements of songs over the years - and I want to continue using these versions when I perform. Plus, I have a half-dozen original songs I routinely include in my Set Lists.
- I do not need a lot of “features”. I just want to record a single track from my piano - nothing more
- I don’t need additional inputs; no overdubbing; no imitation strings or sax or drums. And I do not want to record any vocals
- I also do not need the capability of editing those songs once captured. If I ever decide to modify a song, I’ll just re-record it
- I’ve been told that for me to begin busking - using songs I want to record at home on my piano, I will need to purchase two devices:
1) An audio interface (that will function between my electric piano and sone kind of storage device - iPad????).
2) A battery-powered busking amp

I envision for my live performances, I will only need two inputs into this busking amp:
1) An iPad or iPhone containing the songs I recorded at home on my piano (via the audio interface???)
2) XLR or 1/4” cable for a microphone (which I will sing into during my live busking performances).

So I kinda have an idea of what I want/need to do. But the fuzzy part is how the audio interface works between my electric piano (the source) and the iPad (the eventual storage device). And what features should I be looking for (and which features I will not need).

I appreciate any advice and guidance!!! Thank you very much!!!

Hi and welcome to ASR. This forum is more destined to HiFi playback, not so much music recording. But anyway the advice you got is solid: get an iPad + audio interface + amplified speaker cabinet.

Focusrite Scarlett 3rd gen 2i2 is a best buy as far as I know, and works with iPad.

@HWood Maybe it would be better if you asked the question on some music forum.

You need a powered PA speaker with at least two inputs and a separate battery. One coming taking signal from the piano and another from an iPhone or something similar. Maybe also a microphone input with phantom power.

For example: https://mackie.com/en/products/loudspeakers/srm150/SRM150.html
https://mackie.com/en/products/loudspeakers/srm-v-class/SRM210.html This one can also be controlled by any iOS or Android device, and can accept music streams directly over Bluetooth if you don't want to use an additional cable.

Thank you for your reply!!!

But please note I will not be taking my piano to the busking performance. If I was willing to continue lugging my piano around, I would just go ahead and perform everything live (piano and vocals). No need to pre-record anything. And therefore no need for an audio interface.

Instead, I only thing I want to do live is sing. The backing music I want to use will be pre-recorded from my piano at home.

My confusion is how to get these songs pre-recorded onto an iPad or other device. And I was told I would need an audio interface to pre-record all my songs.

Thanks again!!!

Oh I see. You would need an audio interface like @Matias suggested. It would connect to your piano and computer. You can use a DAW on your computer like Audacity to record and edit songs, and then export them to your phone. This would be done at home.

Playback during busking would still require a PA speaker that accepts a microphone and music from your phone.

Fantastic!!! Thank you!!!

You answered the final detail for me: “Do I need a DAW app on my iPad (like Audacity)???”

Thank you, I think I now have a clear path forward! No more replies needed!!

On your iPad you can run an app called GarageBand from Apple, which is a DAW (multi track recording software).
