It doesn't matter - if the set you heard was good to you, then yes, at the time, it was!!! My epiphany to larger 'mains' was a set of now surpassed ATC SCM200A's, the pre SL soffit mounted version with external big amp pack, not the visually hideous towers with smaller built-in active electronics they make now for audiophiles buying into the brand. The sense of dynamic range on a simple CD of tenor plus piano was incredible and when the otherwise mild-mannered tenor sang out he SANG OUT, almost pushing the listener into the wall behind. Ozric Tentacles' The Throbbe has NEVER sounded as good since (the sales manager had to scuttle from the room, I remember). Ahh, happy daze them were.Ok 15 years old, at that time I wasn't aware of the brand. The older models are more a hit or miss from everything I know. The measurements don't look that good tonality wise. But they seems to have very low to no resonances and good high signal handling.
The absence of resonances and distortion at very high spl handeling was really amazing from the speakers I was listening to. The tonality was also very good. What really stands out is that instruments sound much more real e.g. a snare realy sound like a snare and not like a toy version of a snare with the typically dome tweeter ppsss sound which 95% of speakers with a dome tweeter produce.
And yes, I'm sure that performance available back then is bettered today, but the memories of what was available back then is still with me (I measured up for a pair and had I got a good price on my 100As, an affordable bank loan could have done it as mortgage rates were coming down at the time. Instead, I met the lady who became my very long suffering wife, so all that thought was abandoned thirty years ago.
