New Genelec Main Monitor

Back to the tech - they have their electronics in an external module, which is nice, perhaps makes it even serviceable without having to send the speaker "around the planet":

Seen through a form-follows-function lens, imo it is an incredibly elegant design.

I think the 8480A would work quite well at distances much shorter than 3 meters, as the ear's ability to localize vertically starts decreasing below about 1.5 kHz and will be relatively poor by the time we get to the crossover between the coaxial cone and woofer. So even though the center-to-center vertical distance between the coaxial and cone is probably around fifteen inches, that may well go completely unnoticed even at unusually small listening distance. Hopefully @Ilkka Rissanen will comment.
Hi

As I mentioned, subjective...

It can be used at those distances of course, I would submit that, it is unlikely that it would be acquired for nearfield, as opposed to the many options from the Genelec "The Ones" line up. As main monitor and at their prices, to repeat they have competition. The JBL M2 comes to mind but , one constantly overlooked speaker, yet reviewed here: the Neumann KH 420 does play in their sandlot , "Main Monitors" likely listening positons, 3 to 4 meters, at about half the price. the KH420, can also "do" 122 dB at 1 meter .. so ...

Not crapping on this superb speaker. noting in this discussion, that it does have competition.

@Pearljam5000 Is it made of Alu? If not you should be looking elsewhere :p

Edit: MDF... Back to the search :D

I think a part of the front baffle is aluminum like in 8381 but not sure ;)

For me, purely subjectively speaking, those colored ones might trump anything. If I can match my decor, and the fact that I have to look at my speakers more than listen to them. If W371 were also available in colors, that would be the route I go.
Unfortunately the colors only go up to 8351. 8361 doesn’t get the colors.

Waiting for the 8380BE with the berrylium tweeter ;)

Where's the 8370A, the 12 inch version? ;)
@Ilkka Rissanen has already answered this "We'll see" (if desired).

This is a square box, easy to veneer. And looking at dispersion data, it'll be excellent free standing too. A full spin would be nice to see, and then high end home market should be more ready. Not sure what the wifes would say ;)?

Maybe you aren’t contemplating the size of this? It already costs $10k and weighs 120 pounds. An all aluminum design would rival Magico in weight and cost.
Bit of context.. It is a friendly back and forth, we have with @Pearljam5000 : He dreams of one day acquiring a pair of Genelec speaker, but their enclosure must be made of Alu, else ,no deal, no matter the performances.. Alu or bust !

Peace.

It's FAR too cheap for domestic higher end buyers to consider in all honesty. I now despair of the domestic scene, at least here, as survival and profit count for much of it I reckon, as the 'performance' of too much high end domestic gear is inferior to stuff like this.

There's no denying some hifi speakers look really cool
But I'd still buy the Genelecs for the sound
