Okay, I finally hooked the Level 1 up and I must say, it does definitely sound better than what I was used to (Sony TA-S7 and Sony TA-FE320R).
There's only one thing and that is that the Level 1 feels like it's missing a certain part of the spectrum in the low frequencies (sub 24Hz it starts to struggle it seems but I'm not sure if the limit is imposed by the amp or my speakers). Or maybe it just sounds cleaner which causes me to notice some things more clearly. Maybe the Sony TA-FE320R masked or blended certain parts of the low frequency spectrum. I don't have appropriate gear to test this, all I can say is that I'm impressed. It feels like the Sony TA-FE320R is just a lot more bassy even though the bass and treble was turned to a neutral position on it. But the bass didn't sound better on the Sony, it feels like it was mainly just delivering too much bass. I have to find a way to get more bass into the playback without killing the stereo image.
First things I notice:
- I had to move my speakers around a bit as imperfect alignment is a lot more pronounced now
- The stereo spectrum sounds much wider
- The music seems to reach 'further' into my room and sounds more balanced even when not sitting in the perfect spot
(two
Magnat Monitor Supreme 1000 floorstanding speakers, spaced out in front of me to form a triangle with 2m edges between my head and each speaker, and enough space behind each speaker since they are bass reflex)
- Cleaner details, each sound in a song seems to claim more space
- When playing music on a quieter level, it doesn't sound as good as when I raise the volume a little (the ideal volume is having the volume knob pointing 'west')
I have played a bit with the bass and treble knobs but decided on leaving treble on neutral and bass on around '+4'. I'm playing the music through the USB C connection from my PC. It's time to check out some EQ. Not sure if I'm going to use the app with parametric EQ as I prefer to change these things in a way that is future proof (for example, imagine that the app some day stops working and I won't be able to adjust PEQ anymore).
After half an hour of playing, the case gets warm but not hot.
As you might see I'm not that familiar with the correct terms and most observations are very subjective. All I can say is that this amp makes my speakers feel like they doubled in value hahaha.
