New build of Linkwitz LXMini

@juliangst did you build the lx mini? If so how does it compare to your ls50 & sub setup?

I have a 12' X 16' semi-treated listening room. When I have finished doing the treatment I am tempted to switch from the ls50s and sealed sub, to a lx mini and sealed sub.
I can't comment on ls50 vs lxmini, but as with any (IMO) omni-directional speaker (or partial omni in this case) it will sound best if your listening position is closer than the speakers are wide.

So if 8' apart on 12' wall, then listening position should ideally be less than 8'. If your listening position is more like 10-12+ feet back from speakers spread 8', I would recommend the narrower radiating ls50's.

I recently completed a set of LXmini speakers. The finished speakers seen here are finished using vinyl wrap, paint and a variety of custom 3D-printed parts. The kit from Linkwitz comes ready-to-assemble, but is unfinished, allowing for deep personalization in this way.

They are placed at the recommended 1m distance from the back wall (though they sit closer in these images).

The detail, tonality and sheer enjoyment of the speakers is the highest I have experienced. Music is fun, emotionally involving and due to the speaker's ability to create a "holographic" soundstage, listening takes on a cinematic experience. Martin Logan electrostatic speakers, as well as a variety of others, have sat in this very same room and the LXminis smoke all of them as the most enjoyable listening experience in the way that are important for me.

They are, however, SPL limited due to the woofer's driver size, but they will play up to around 80 to 82dB SPL (C-weighted, slow average) before the woofer's motor runs into its mechanical limit. For most music listening this is plenty of volume.

The SEAS woofer is 5", but is a long-throw design and provides an almost miraculous level of tonally rich, pitch-accurate, uncolored bass. Bass definition is glorious. In average rooms, the bass output is not what I'd call "lean". Rather, it's quite full and engaging.

I plan to add the Linkwitz-recommended passive sub-woofers at some point in the near future to fill in the bottom octave.

My contribution to this discussion is simply to reinforce that these speakers are quite wonderful and if anyone were inclined to build them and use them in an average listening space where they are positioned per Linkwitz's recommended spacing from boundaries, they will be rewarded with a listening experience unlike (positive) the vast majority of commercial speakers.
